Good evening,

After a subarachnoid bleed on the 1st of March with many more problems along the way including vasospasms and hospital contracted pneumonia my mum has eventually left Queens Hospital Romford, and is now back in her local hospital, the hospital in question is unable to deal with TBI and applied for funding for her to be transferred to a neurological rehab unit, we were informed today that the funding had been granted.

My question is: Doe’s anybody have any experience of Fen House in Ely Cambridgeshire as this is the rehab unit they are applying to.

Many Thanks 😊

Just wanted to pass on best wishes for your mum's progress Kes. Sorry I've no knowledge of Fen house but hope someone else will have helpful info. How is your mum doing m'dear, and are the complications dealt with ?

Love Cat x

Hi Cat,

Yes everything was eventually sorted, she did have a rough trot bless her!

She was assessed by staff from the Neuro unit today and they have agreed she is a promising candidate for rehab 😊

Hopefully she will be moved there in the next week xx

Great news. With the rehab in sight you can all settle down to the business of your mum's reconnection with the world. I was hospitalised for 2 months after a SAH but my only complication was short term aphasia, so maybe a longer stay for your mum.

How is she now Kes. Is she engaging with people/speaking/mobile ? x

Yes she speaks and is mobile but her speech is limited and she gets frustrated as she can’t find the right words, she knows who I am and is very tactile.

Some of the things she comes out with make no sense at all but she is here and that makes me happy xx

That all sounds really promising Kes. Your mum has managed to retain the basic tools for building on. Speech can be improved although her vocabulary might always be slightly compromised by word recall (still drives me nuts sometimes). But it's something most of us can work around with persistence and humour.

Don't worry about 'nonsense' remarks ; I was full of them at first and my family were shocked and concerned, but recalling those remarks now just has us in stitches. 😂

Let us know when your mum has made the move won't you m'dear. Hope it's soon and she settles nicely into rehab. xx

Thank you for your support through what has been the most difficult time xxx

Hi there,

My husband was in Fen House for a brief spell last year and I found it to be a really nice place. He had a room where he could come in and out and there is a garden area that he could wander in and out of. He was moved as he became aggressive and was then sections under the mental health act and moved to Elm Park In Colchester which is a secure unit. Now that he has settled and no longer aggressive they are looking at Fen House again which is only 20 minutes from home and would make life much easier all round. Hope you hear soon regarding her move x

Thanks for getting back to me, I’m glad to hear your husband is heading back there that is positive, I live on the Suffolk/Norfolk border so Ely is about and hour and a half, but mum is currently in Colchester hospital and that isn’t much closer.

Distance isn’t an issue I just want her to come back to us.

you say she makes no sense. listen very carefully ( no im not going to say this only only once as they said on allo allo ) where as we string together a number of words to make a sentence, a person with a brain injury, may string together words, but if you listen, those words will make a sentence that makes sense.

before my stroke and before i worked in mental health/ learning disabilities, i worked with the elderly, some had speech problems and thats where i learnt this method. you need to be vvv patient, something i had plenty of back then.

Some of what she says makes sense, but hasn’t happened.

She will use names of people unknown to her and go on about how they have visited and wanted her to go out walking etc, the only people who visit mum are very close relatives and non of us have suggested a walk! It sort of reminds me of my Nan (her mum) who has dementia if that makes sense, awful as my mum is only 62.
