Brain aneurysm coiling

Husband is going in next week to get his 10mm coiled . What can he expect afterwards . His biggest fear is having a stroke during or after surgery . Is this a high possibility ? Then once he has recovered he goes back to get stent in another one. Worry , worry .

Hi Cath. I had a Subarachnoid haemorrhage coiled 6 years ago and, as a result of the bleed, I've been left with (among other issues) short term memory loss, mobility issues and fatigue. But those are the result of the bleed contaminating the brain. It's possible that with an un-ruptured aneurism your husband will escape with fewer, if any, after effects.

Stroke is always a possibility with an invasive procedure but, coiling being the least invasive, poses the lowest risk of any.

Please see the link below for information on coiling :-

All best wishes for your man's safe procedure next week ; let us know how he gets on won't you........ Cat x

Cath, the website is faulty but you can still access the page in question. Select 'Our publications' which takes you to 'Fact sheet'........you'll find Coiling in the index.

Hi Cath

I too am going in for a coiling on the 29/05.

I understand you fear and worry as I’ve lived with this for a number of years but just been monitored with MRI.

Everyone has a different story and outcome but probably mainly from the anethestic. It’s minimally invasive and a lot of folk say it’s the laying down for a few hous afterwards that’s the most annoying. Possibly a few headaches and impaired vision of a bit but as I say everyone is different. Should be in overnight and put next day but they will have a bed in ICU ready just incase. The way I’m looking at it is that if things don’t go to plan it’s better to be on the ‘table’ than unaware of even having one oblivious at home. Those people who’ve had a rupture would surely recommend treatment before the worst happens.

Which hospital is he going to. I’m at the Walton Centre in Liverpool. Mine is 6mm but I have 4 of them!!!! Only doing 1 I think but hey who knows!!

Best of luck and you’ll both soon be the other side of it all🤗

Regards Andrea x

Thanks for your reply guys . Its the western hospital in Edinburgh he's going to . Just done a trial run through but parking is terrible so think I will train it and bus it as don't want to stress myself out lol. Once he's recovered from this one he's getting stent in the 7mm one and there is another at 5 that's going to get monitored . Will there be does and donts after it ? X
