Does anyone live alone after an SAH?

Hi

Does anyone live alone after suffering an SAH? My dad will be coming out of hospital soon. He usually lives alone. He will be staying with me for the short term but when I work full time and wonder whether he will be ok whilst I'm at work?

Thanks

This is really a question for your dad's consultant Yojo. I know there are some folk who have managed alone after a SAH, (including myself) but I was grateful for the company of a friend for the first few weeks after discharge.

I wasn't especially confused when I came home, but from what you've said it sounds like your dad might be. It's a case of using your judgement as to whether you think he will be safe at home alone.

Is he likely to have problems with gas/electric/falling etc ? It's so different for everyone that, whereas one person might be safe alone, another might be vulnerable. Only you can judge which category applies to your dad.

Perhaps it could be arranged for him to be accompanied for the first 2 or 3 days to see what issues, if any, there might be.

Hope you can find the right balance Yojo ; I'm sure it must be a worry for you ! Best wishes, Cat x

I agree with cat everyone is different and you should discuss this with your consultant. We were told my sister needed 24 hour care after her SAH and we all worked full time. We all still work and my sister has carers coming in which is a real help and she is fine - she is on her own for probably an hour a day which has worked fine so far. Good luck with it all and keep positive

Hi

Would agree with comments so far - that it all depends on the whole situation.

I didn't have SAH but similar BI symptoms after my CVST ( form of stroke) and live alone. My sister stayed with me a few days after hospital discharge - but had to return to Germany. She and my sons put in place carers to come in to dispense medication - as I sometimes had no idea whether I had taken it or not and was therefore unsafe in that respect. We also gave my car to my son - so I did not accidentally forget I wasn't allowed to drive - and hid the bath plug as I was not allowed to bath when unsupervised ( only a handful of good friends knew where it was an it was a luxury I could have if they were available to sit just outside whilst I enjoyed a bath) - I might otherwise have thought it was safe for me to bath.....

I also had a variety of friends calling in most days ( probably reported back to my sons but I have no idea ) and most days I would pop in to say hello to the doctor's receptionists as a little 20 minute stroll was good for me.

You will have to assess the situation along with medical advice once he is with you. Is there a neuro community rehab team near you ? They were also a great help when I needed them.

Good luck

Hello Yojo. This is really dependant on your dad's condition and any medical advice when he goes home. My son stayed with me for a week at my house, and when he went back to work I lived at my daughter's for 2 weeks. It was my decision to go home permanently.

I don't need carers and luckily only take paracetamol for headaches but I did have a lifeline fitted so I could call for help. I have since moved to a sheltered housing scheme where someone is available for emergencies but basically I still live alone with my own front door. The thing I needed most was initial support and help to regain my confidence. Now I've settled into my new home and started to take up old and new activities, in some ways my life is better than it was before my surgery.

I hope your dad makes a good recovery.

I 've had a head injury and have lived by myself for the past 5 years since my famly left but I have a life line fitted which means I've only got to press a button to get through to a call center who will take aappropriate action I also have a bed sensor wich senses a fit which has saved my life a few times so the answer ies if you have this installed all the best
