I was told that MRI's only pick up initial injuries and that they do not work years after the injury. Is this true?

MRI's
I would have thought that if damage has been done to your brain it will always be there to be seen . My last MRI was in November 2013 and it showed the areas of damage that were done in February 2012, there were no new damaged areas but the initial damage, that causes my symptoms was still there to be seen. Much love Janet xxxxx
Janet! I miss you so much! My friend has a hypoxic injury and he says at first his mri showed severe global damage but now his mri's are normal. Weird huh...
Hi Negeen, I'm still here, a hypoxic injury may be different, I'm no expert, but oxygen therapy can help the brain make new pathways, my injuries were caused by my brain swelling, which causes brain cells to die they then release toxins which speeds up the dying processes, once they are dead that's it, but the brain can still find new pathways around the damaged areas that's why it's important to keep on trying to do things, to make those new pathways.
Hope you're doing Ok xxxxoo Janet
Not a expert but as far as I'm aware that's not correct, if there is something to pick up, clearly you can have damage that will be hard if not impossible to pick up, though these things are very clever, it's not a StarTrek tori order etc.
I was told that old injuries to the brain can be difficult to find with a scan
further to my reply just been to neurology today just been told that their is no way of checking for brain injury caused a long time ago.
CT scans are good at picking up acute injuries, but MRI's are used to detect any injury up to any length of time afterwards. Sometimes though, there's nothing to see on the MRI, so it's not foolproof.
yes as Barny1 states CT scans depict acute injuries, I.e. my initial bleed on brain just after accident, but further imagining on MRI scan, four months later, one dr stated I had MS, another stated a number of mini strokes, another said MRI scan reported to be normal. A number of professionals have reported with MRI scans the damage is either microscopic, or too dense in the brain to be identified by MRI, but still just as damaging to our brains as Identifiable abnormalities. Frustrating is the word!!!
Nah, I've just had my annual MRI to check on my AVM, and will continue to do so for quite some time. CT scans are used initially.
mine as seen in my profile pic was done 10 years after my injury
I'VE HAD A FEW SINCE THE ORIGINAL INJURY. THEY SHOW HOW THE BRAIN IS HEALING. THE FOLLOW UP ONES AFTER THE BLEED SHOWED THE BRUISING& SWELLING HAD GONE DOWN & THE SCAR IS MORE STABLE ALTHOUGH THE GOLF BALL SIZED HOLE IN MY BRAIN WILL NEVER GO IT IS NOT GETTING ANY WORSE. .
IT'S ALWAYS WORTH HAVING FOLLOW UP MRI JUST TO SEE WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE INJURY.
Hi I had a stroke as a baby and the damage can be seen in on an MRI taken recently.
I am 35
