Are gluten by mistake for a few weeks šŸ™ˆ

Iā€™ve been having Bombay mix - a savoury Indian snack almost every other day for the past two weeks or more. Just today I noticed cornflakes itā€™s one main item In the pack. Normal cornflakes šŸ™ˆ. So Iā€™ve been eating gluten all this time. But I donā€™t remember getting my usual symptoms after eating gluten. One thing Iā€™ve noticed lately is my stomach has become horrendously bigger it seems. I wondered y and now I think could it be because of this???

Hi Junny1.

Itā€™s hard to say. But if you suspect the Bombay mix just donā€™t eat any for 2 weeks strict gluten free and see how you feel?

Might be down to your personal sensitivity threshold. Most coeliacā€™s after taking time to heal their guts can tolerate the ā€œCodexalimentariasā€ gluten free labelling allowed upto 20 parts per million. Possible the corn flakes are below this threshold.

Only way to know is to avoid it for a week or 2 and see if feel better.

Corn does not have gluten. For many of us who are Celiac, especially those of us who also suffer with its accompanying skin disorder Dermatitis Herpetiformis or DH, we have to avoid all grains as well as soy, yeasts, etc.

Cornflakes have Barley Malt Extract as an ingredient. I think it's around the 20ppm level, which means they cannot be considered gluten free, but they may not cause an obvious reaction in someone who has a high tolerance for cross-contamination.

Thank you. Good to know. Everything is so adulterated these days.

It's odd that Bombay mix contains cornflakes? What brand is it? Bombay mix I would not touch as any ones I have looked at online seem to have gluten in same factory. I think the only way to stay safe is just scrutinise every ingredient label and take the time to check with manufacturer on any new things you haven't tried before. Bloating - could be the gluten, if the Bombay mix contains, or could just be general gut stress from bacterial imbalance or other intolerances. Just go back to strick GF and see if it resolves.
