Vitamin B12 issues: full bloods are on the low side

I think my doctor was fed up enough to order full bloods. Anyhoo, we 'ruled out' thryoid issues, he has prescribed a Vit. D booster with no need for follow-up.

I asked for a print-out of the test results and I do think a few things that relate to B12 are on the borderline of either high or low. I'll write and let the doc know (insert cheeky devil emoticon), but I wondered if anyone here has issues with B12 deficiency? Vit D?

Hi MausenMumma,

Glad to hear that you’re gradually getting sorted.

Having vitamin D and B12 deficiencies is relatively common in those who are newly with Coeliac Disease and sometimes also with those who have NCGS (Non Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity).

I had an issue with both Vit D and B12 when I was first diagnosed (Vit D treatment was prescribed via an endocrinologist). As a result of this support, I also found out that had a borderline issue with magnesium deficiency, which I then got sorted out as well.

If you have any issues with GERD, then it’s possible that you have a problem with LOW stomach acid. I used to have daily heartburn and would eat antacids like sweets to no avail. Two years ago I chose to drastically reduce my daily carb intake (to support with a completely different health need) and then went on to supplement with Betaine HCL (in combination with Pepsin) - which I took for about for 3 months. Happily my gastric issues cleared up completely - and haven’t returned since. Drastically changing my overall gut microbiome health has surprisingly really helped with my general overall health. However please take medical advice before going Keto or before using Betaine HCL, as neither choice is a regime that’s suitable for everyone.

Good luck on your health journey.

Hi MausenMumma,I had positive TTG and was already pretty ill, joints, glands, fatigue GI symptoms. I gave up gluten, was lactose intolerant and fruit was a no go.

I started supplements as a reflexologist had told me I was low in calcium and B12. Within a month I started having bladder problems and trigeminal neuralgia. I kept ringing GP, eventually 4 months later, a locum said you need your bloods taken. My ferritin had dropped again and my B12 was pretty low. My ferritin was 7. I was a physical wreck.

NICE have recently updated (April 2021) iron deficiency anaemia - ferritin less than 30 micro grams - bullet point 7 - I hope I can count.

I’ve had quite a journey. I worked with a private dietician and now with a functional practitioner as SIBO. Wishing you all the best
