Gluten and Urticaria (Hives)

Hi

I am hypothyroid, not sure if I have hashimotos' the autoimmune type but my antibodies are top of the range.

About 18 months ago I saw an Immunologist because I started to suffer with cold urticaria (hives when out in the cold weather) he did lots of blood tests but nothing really showed up. He prescribed antihistamines.

Last week on holiday here in the U.K. I started with what I thought was prickly heat, as I had been sat in the sun. The next day the rash was on my stomach, which had been covered in the sun. The rash then began to spread and I still have it a week later. It looks very much like hives. It does not itch like my cold hives, just feels hot.

I am wondering if gluten could be the cause as although I do eat it daily I suppose I did eat more on holiday, having some lovely desserts that I don't normally have.

On the Thyroid forum some advise a gluten free diet especially if you have hash's. so I am wondering if I should try it.

Has anyone here had hives from eating gluten, if so did it go when you cut gluten out.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thank you.

I was diagnosed with Hashimotos and Gluten Intolerance 8 years ago and went GF. Later the Gluten Intolerance was changed to Celiac. For over 20 years I have had a "rash" on my scalp. A more descriptive term would be like ingrown hairs. Two years ago the diagnoses for this came back as Dermatitis Herpetiformis, which is a Celiac skin disorder. As I look back on my life, I can determine that I have probably been Celiac for at least 50 years with the accompanying DH showing up 20 years or so ago. If your "rash" is itchy/painful and have fluid inside the bumps, it is probably DH. I have become grains free over the years and that has helped a great deal. I would recommend that you go GF as soon as possible.

Many hanks for your reply.

I do get a rash with the fluid filled bumps around the side of my mouth that really itches

I have had this on and off for years.

The rash now is different and really does not itch that much.

I will try gluten free to see if it helps.

Good to hear you have now got yours sorted out.
