gluten challenge question

hello I am new here I have been gluten free for FIFTEEN YEARS!! I just decided on my own because of the horrible symptoms I have when I eat gluten, but I still had on going symptoms even after going gluten free. so, I decided that I need to know for sure if I have celiac disease or not. I just really want to know. My mom dies of cancer and other disease at 60. She had these digestive/emotional symptoms for for as long as I can remember then she got really sick in her 50s and suffered a lot. I still feel that she may have had undiagnosed celiac disease

I did have the gene test done and I tested positive for the gene so, my gi says I have a 50/50 change of having celiac.

But now I am faced with having to eat gluten for 3 weeks evry day for my endoscopy oct 25th and I am scared o death. if a person has been gluten free for 15 years, how much gluten would I need to eat... my gi says 1 to sliced of bread should be enough, but for some reason I doubt that is going to be enough...

I don't know how to go about this... I am just so terrified and am thinking of cancelling the endoscopy... I don't know what to do

Personally I wouldn’t do the challenge. If you have the gene and the symptoms were awful when you ate it that should be proof enough. Also you may not be Coeliac but gluten sensitive...which means no degradation of the villi but other symptoms can be just as bad and cause all sorts of other damage. If you are still struggling you may either have other sensitivies e.g. dairy and other suspects or you are becoming more gluten intolerant and getting symptoms from contamination... happens to a lot of us. What are your current symptoms?

everything from diarrhea vomiting migraines extreme itching butning pain in my feet and hands, the list goes on and on when iw as on gluten . But even off gluten for 15 years I am now suffering from major depression panic disorder, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety discorder. SO even off gluten I seem to be having a lot of problems.

So my family has completely abandoned me since ive become clinically depsressed , right now I cannot even bring myself care about them but, I have a newborn nephew ( who I have not even met) but for his sake I kind of wanted to know because if I test positive then isn't it true that family member should be tested, like my nephew? because I do care about his health and the earlier a diagnosis the better?

Really interesting you should say about the depression. The gurney is our second brain and can have a massive effect on mental health. I would 1) keep a food and mood diary and take it to a nutritionist or holistic practitioner after about a month. 2) have food sensitivity test 3) do an elimination diet...start really clean... just meat and non starchy veg for three weeks (you may feel much better after this in which case definitely something you are eating 4) treat potential Candida overgrowth. Grapefruit seed extract is very good. Follow the instructions. Repopulate bowel with good probiotic. 5) make 100% sure you are not getting contaminated... no vinegar, no grains at all, no marmite etc etc. Check everything you put in your mouth. Hope this helps!! Btw I was suffering depression for last year and year before. Turned out I was getting micro gluten contamination

personally I wouldn't bother.

I've been gluten free for nearly two years now, my choice when GP's and two Consultants couldn't find the cause of my problems and now shake their heads when i mention gluten challenge and biopsy.

I feel better than I've ever felt before AND feel in control of my life, I am hlaDQ2 positive so possibly coeliac, but why do i need a piece of paper to prove it.

Of course it's a personal choice and only one that you can make.

It really makes me very angry that the medical profession like to make you worse to prove THEIR point. Perhaps you should ask why they insist on doing you harm - against their hippocratic oath? [First do no harm]. if iI were to eat wheat or gluten for 3 days; let alone 3 weeks; I would be unable to walk and be in muscle spasm. There is NO WAY I would put myself through that. Get an appointment with your Dietician, you may get more help from that quarter. Doctors have very little training in nutrition - big mistake! We are what we eat after all. Study your microbiome and research that. KBO!
