Domino’s pizza for coeliac?

Just spent a nice day with our son for his birthday and the talk inevitably came to a take-away tea. I felt relatively safe ordering a Domino pizza as on the CoeliacUK site it says it’s a certified shop. But put it into Google and it’s all about intolerance rather than coeliac-and how coeliac’s should avoid it. Mixed message? Not sure who to believe. Must admit I felt miserable eating Amy’s macaroni while they had a pizza.

Hi Winger65 I wouldn't risk it. Domino's may well use codex approved ingredients but they are prepared with ordinary pizza's and cooked in the same oven. To cook a pizza properly it goes straight onto the oven shelf and then be baked with gluten containing ones.

Some of my friends and family think that GF labelling is aimed at the gluten free fad and not real coeliac...And I'd rather be safe than sorry as I see the crossed grain symbol with CUK certification as a warning and not as safe for me.

Now this is how to do proper gluten free food certification:

gluten.org

It's a very sad state of affairs when coeliac are frightened of certified gluten free food...

It is. I was only diagnosed in June after 2 years of wondering what it might be. I’d been consoled by friends and family showing me alternatives and being kind. Problem is I’m also a type 1 diabetic and having another diet to follow that’s also treacherous ( remember ‘diabetic sweets’ as a kid ) is very sad ☹️

Hi Winger65 , you are not alone on the Healthy Eating forum we have a coeliac as admin and a type 1 diabetic ( Activity2004 ) who is also gluten free and we have 2 coeliacs who are volunteers and lots of naturally gluten free low carb meals on here:

healthunlocked.com/healthye...

Gluten free topic section on HE:

healthunlocked.com/healthye...

So you and other coeliac who want a naturally gluten free diet will be in great company with us.

Thanks Jerry! Bit of a minefield so far. If I fancy a biscuit, a ‘normal’ one is 10 gms of carbohydrate but the gf is 27gms, so my whole lunch! Plus if my blood sugar dips I can’t have a midnight biscuit! Good to know I’m not alone however, it’s a steep learning curve but so was diabetes in the 70’s, and we know much more now. Thanks for your kind reply x

I have had GF pizza's from them which didnot contaminate me ,however I have also been contaminated. Their "excuse" was that when they are busy they cannot guarantee the pizza, although on a Gf base, is not contaminated by the prep area or the cutting knives. Same really.

Thank you. Glad I didn’t bother. Shame though.

I'm celiac and have been for the past 4 years. Had a pizza from Domino's last week and it was very tasty, and i was fine!!

Maybe I’ll do a test next time we are at our son’s then! More chance of contamination from his student kitchen 😆

I had domino's right after I was diagnosed and not only did it taste horrible I was confused for a long time about it. Was it or was it not gluten free??? Finally after messaging them directly, they informed me that they do not recommend their gf pizza for celiacs because even if they safely prepare it, it's almost guaranteed to be contaminated in the oven either by the pan or the fans inside the oven.

Also we all have got to remember that just because we eat something and feel fine, that doesn't mean it was safe and didn't cause damage!

I'm so guilty of thinking like that!

Remember it's our immune system that goes into over drive and often times it's such a small amount of gluten, we may just feel fatigued several days later or a get a headache or whatever. Even if it's mild, internal damage is occurring and it may not be mild at all.

On an up note, I don't know if you all have Freshetta pizza in the freezer isle there but they make the most delicious gluten free pizza I've ever had! Much better than any made to order gf pizza anywhere!

Just be sure you don't overcook it!
