Just cut out gluten.

Hi

I am hypothyroid and have recently cut out gluten.

My celiac test was negative but as my thyroid antibodies are rising I decided to cut gluten out to see if would help with my hypothyroidism.

I stopped eating gluten ten days ago and have since had two bad episodes of diarreha, my appetite is not very good and today my stomach is really bloated and hurts and I feel more tired.

Does anyone know if this is a type of withdrawal effect?

Thank you.

Hi Lucylocks

Not sure about 'withdrawal' symptoms, but if you have changed your diet radically your body could be struggling to adjust.

I don't know what you are eating now, but ready made gluten free foods can contain additives that may upset your stomach, things like gums, emulsifiers, cellulose. It tends to be best to stick to naturally gluten free foods as much as you can.

Sometimes keeping a food diary can help to pinpoint the problem.

Hi, I'm hypothyroid and recently diagnosed with Lichen Sclerosis. After reading the book The Autoimmune Fix, I cut out gluten, dairy and sugar. The doctor recommends adding prebiotic and probiotic foods to help with repairing leaky gut, so I've been eating a tablespoon of sauerkraut or kimchie and a square of 85% dark chocolate every day. Not sure if this will help (I'm very new to all this!) but thought I'd mention it in case it did.

I agree totally with what Penel said in relation to the Free From aisle, the only thing I eat from there are the nakd bars, and then only in moderation. Home made chicken broth is very good for helping the gut heal and calming diarrhoea. You might want to talk to your doctor and a dietician about your symptoms and get some guidance. Following a particular type of direction on diet can be more beneficial than just winging it. The FODMAP approach helps many, as does the Paleo approach. Personally I find the SCD diet addresses my problems best.
