Platelets when low are dangerous n I'm surprised are Dr didn't set you up w a platelets transfusion! I'm not sure if you can get red meat but if that help also you can get some platelet boosters from your gnc store or your store that sells your gluten free Celtic food. Also if you can look up on the internet how you boost your own remedies from home to boost them ! If they are below 130,000 tell your Dr you want a platelets transfusion to hold you off untill you get something but they are around 200 ,000 n above to 400, 000 you are good untill you get something from the store or do home remedies but I wouldn't wait 3 months for recheck if you see any kind of changes in your self go-to the er or your Drs ASAP n tell them what's going on. They are what help makes your blood clot . So any changes or color of any kind skin tongue face bruising or to er or Drs n tell n tell them you might need a platelets transfusion.

I have low platelets too. My GP sent me to see a hemotologist who diagnosed ITP. He told me as long as I was between 400 and 50 it was ok, below 50 would be something to worry about. Only time a transfusion would be needed is if having surgery (dental included). Speak to your GP and request he send you to the hemotologist.

My son had low platelets in 2008, he was a very fit 21 year old who played sport regularly.

Then one day his whole leg went black and we thought that he might have a leg fracture from playing football, but X-rays showed nothing and he was sent home, a few days later his tongue started going purple, he got nose bleeds that just wouldn't stop, so he went to A&E where they found that his platelets were down around 4 which we were told were dangerously low and very dangerous.

He was admitted to hospital and this went on for a number of weeks and they couldn't find a way of treating it, and decided that they would have to remove his spleen in a final attempt to remedy his condition, but at the same time they put on a new experimental drug and miraculously, within days his platelets started to increase for the first time in weeks and they decided that they wouldn't have to remove his spleen after all, and he continued to make a full recovery, he still has to have regular checks, but he seems fine now.

But the bottom line is, low platelets can be extremely dangerous and as crissyx5 says, I'm surprised by your GP's lack of urgency in getting to the bottom of your condition.

We don't wish to scare you and hopefully your platelets will recover, but do keep a lookout for any unexplained bruising, nose bleeds etc.

All the best.

My platelets have always been low but within range until my blood test in February when they dropped by quite a bit to below range. My GP said it was fine and probably just me. And sometimes the lab reports a lower figure. I'm not sure I'm convinced and will ask for them to be repeated next month.

Hi pepepoo

Please don't worry. Three months is a long time to wait isn't it?

Do you think then that your 'low' count is lower than normal but not presently dangerously low? What are your symptoms?

I'd go straight back to GP and discuss your concerns. If you can't get an appointment soon enough to put your mind at ease then you could ask the practice for your blood test results details ie numbers and normal range numbers also. You could phone and write them down or call in and ask for print out.

You could phone the practice and request a phone call back from GP if you prefer. Just tell him your worries and ask how low, and what does this mean?

Hope you get some more accurate information soon. x

thanks everybody for your care & reply's , i have been celiac for a year with osteopenia

due to my celiac disease i have problem`s with milk & high fruit, i want to find out if i had other intolerance`s so i ask my doc for a intolerance`s test , she said i needed to see my consultant for that but she could give me a blood test ..i have had three now and three months it will be my fourth ..i don`t have any bruising but i do get nose bleed`s , i did read autoimmune disease could give you low platelets ....i am going request my doctor send me to a haematologist .

Hi again.

Are you on any inhalers for Asthma or using any nasal sprays?

Just a thought. I used to use a steroid inhaler which caused nose bleeds.

I hope you get details/numbers of your results and haematology appointment soon.
