Low folate and neurological symptoms

Hi All

I have low folate at the moment and neurological symptoms. I also have another condition that does affect me neurologically so I'm not sure whether it is that or the folate deficiency that is causing my recent symptoms.

I have numbness is my face mainly on one side but also in my back and at times my legs, I've been getting headaches and when I have to concentrate I get so mentally tired then get forgetful.

I am waiting for a neurologists appointment but until then am trying to figure out the cause of these symptoms, would be really interested to hear if anyone has experienced anything similar.

Thanks

Hi Galaxy2.

Sorry to hear, hopefully you get neurology appointment soon.

Definitely the folate deficiency can contribute to those symptoms. It might be a combination of your condition and the deficiency in essential nutrients. Assuming your B12 is good? As folate supplements can mask B12 deficiency so make sure that’s good first. They both have identical symptoms but different effects. Also assuming your blood sugar is normal and well controlled?

I’m low in folate (2 at last test). I’m still recovering my gut from wheat/gluten intolerance after a gluten challenge. I’m still getting IBS. We are only as good as what we absorb. My main I now realise are probably due to a lack of folate are the Fatigue, aching joints, twinges, brain fog, dizzy spells and mood.

Keep us posted.

thanks so much for your reply. Yes I thought the low folate was probably causing the neurological symptoms but has aggravated past nerve damage so symptoms are a mixture of causes. My b12 deficiency was ok at my last blood test.

I cut gluten out of my diet years ago as I was sure I had celiac but it didn’t show up in my bloods or a previous biopsy, but gluten had such an adverse effect on me. I have other auto immune diseases and family history of celiac so thought it fitted. I also struggle to absorb iron. I ate gluten over a year ago now in error and it made me so unwell, I lost a lot of weight last year and while being investigated for the cause of my weight loss I was diagnosed with celiac from the stomach biopsies I had taken.

Will be interesting to see if my levels rise after folic acid supplements and a very folate rich diet.

Hope your levels head in the right direction too and you feel better soon!
