Am allergic to all things potato, any ideas on GF bread or flour, flour mix that would be ok for me? thanks.

Have tried various breads but ended up feeling worse than with normal bread, then found out was allergic to potato and its derivatives. End of bread?

Most gluten free flour mixes are made with some combination of rice, corn, and tapioca as well as potato, and you could make up your own mix using only the first three.

It's pretty easy to get hold of rice flour. They have Dove's where I shop. This works well in white sauces and in cakes, even on its own. I had to search a bit harder to find tapioca. My staple flours are rice and tapioca.

Then there is almond flour (ground almonds), gram flour (chickpeas), buckwheat flour, chestnut flour, coconut flour and arrowroot. There is lots of choice - maybe too much - once you start looking. There are so many recipes available on the net.

You will probably have to read a lot of labels, but I am sure there are ready-made products out there without potato. This seems to be one:

thanks Poing, Just seems a bit overwhelming at the moment to check everything - potato starch seems to be everywhere. will check out your great suggestions - would put a smiley but not sure where to find one lol.....

Hello Janette27,

I'm recently diagnosed, so am still on the experiment path. What I have found, though, is a bread mix branded 'Orgran' which has the following ingredients:

Maize Starch, Rice Flour, Raising Agents: Glucono Delta Lactone, Sodium Bicarbonate, Dextrose from Maize, Emulsifier: Vegetable Derived Mono and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids, Vegetable Gums Stabilisers: Carboxymethylcellulose, Guar Gum Methylcellulose, Sea Salt.

They also do a recipe page with bread made from their own flour, though I've not checked the flour ingredients.

As poing suggests there are lots of recipes on the net. The range of flours is almost endless and the best range is always at the chinese supermarket.

Remember that many baked items are naturally GF. Macaroons can be made with almond or coconut. Pakora type things with gram/chick flour also called besan. Italian cakes are often made with almonds.

A light welshcake like pancake can be made with peanut flour and egg making a great but substantial lunch. Peanut flour from the chinese supermarket. Once you get going you can try all the flours as little pancakes, some are better than others, some can be improved with about quarter teaspoon of baking powder. Adding shredded vegetables like courgette makes them even lighter and more of a scone texture.

It's worth exploring and like us you may find that most gf bread sold is so unlike wheat bread that you don't bother with it. Except Newburn seeded wraps which perform well but only occasionally because they have such a long list of ingredients.

I don't eat bread because of a problem with yeast, but make the occasional pancake with cooked sweet potato or buckwheat flour.

Watch out for potato flour in grated cheese.

I have several gf cookery books as I love cooking and baking, there are plenty of recipes on the Internet and I also have a Pinterest board where I collect gf recipes. There are lots out there. How hard it must be for you to find potato is a problem, as you say potato starch is in many items. As well as rice flour, tapioca etc Sorghum flour is available and can be used in a mix -thehealingkitchen.blogspot....

Hi, I've recently been diagnosed with celiac disease as well as IBS and bread was a problem for me until I found brown teff flour. I get this on prescription from my GP but you can also buy it from healthysupplies. I use this receipe; it's ease and is a really tasty wholesome earthy bread nourishingmeals.com/2009/03....

Perhaps you could try spelt or GF oats instead of any other flours

spelt is not gluten free, but if it is only potato you have to avoid it would be ok
