Travelling with eye drops
I don't know whether or not the drops will be ok in the hold in terms of air pressure and temperature - but even if they are I would always keep medication in hand luggage. If your hold luggage gets misdirected/lost you'll lose your drops.(The Frio wallets are very good if you need to keep drops cool.)
Safe travels!
I travel to Bali every year and always ensure all my drops are in my hand luggage, plus my husband has a full set with him too.
No problems with air pressure etc, however this year my eyes became very dry (a lot more than normal) because of air conditioning so ensure you take extra bottles for dry eyes also.
I’m currently on 3 different eye drops morning/night plus the dry eye drops
Hi,
I do this very regularly. I put enough drops in hand luggage for a week or so and the rest I put in the hold. Never any issue with this.
However you MUST take your prescription with you so that if your luggage gets lost you can still pick up the drops (or any other prescription medication) at a pharmacy in your destination.
When you’re taking your drops through security put them in a separate bag to any toiletries. I didn’t and when my toiletries were taken for random liquid testing the security agent refused to let me take my bottle of drops out or say if they’d been tested so I ended up throwing the bottle away as I didn’t know what had happened to them. Fortunately I was returning home, If I’d been going the other way I’d have had to try and replace my drops. Since then I’ve always used an additional bag and pointed out that medication isn’t subject to the one bag limit per person whenever they say I can’t have two bags for liquids.
I travelled to New Zealand for a month earlier this year and took all mine in hand luggage just in case my luggage got lost
The drops are not the sort that need to be stored in the fridge but they shouldn’t be stored above 25 deg C.
So I put mine in a tiny case with freezer packs in my hand luggage ( I bought the case for diabetes meds which comes with tiny freezer packs) … it was a tight squeeze but I got them all in . This was to ensure that they never got over the 25 deg C.
At Heathrow security they asked to see my prescription, which I had with me, along with letter from consultant saying I had glaucoma… security guy was happy with that.
I cannot see why not, if you are worrying about a practical/technical problem. But best put them all in carry on in case your luggage goes missing?
