Breastfeeding on Cosopt preservative free eyedrops

Hello, I have been back and forth with my eye consultant the last few weeks. I am now 38 weeks pregnant and they have switched me to cosopt eyedrops preservative free twice a day.

I had laser eye surgery which they were hoping would bring my pressures down for 4-6months with no medication but this hasn't brought the pressures down just the opposite they have sky rocketed so going on another medication at the moment is not an option but it was to be discussed if I can take them and breastfeed for a short amount of time. I am still waiting to hear back from the consultant but this is taking time and could pop any day.

Has anyone taken cosopt eyedrops and breastfed? I can't find any information online and have not been provided any further information from the consultant. Hoping I can breastfeed for at least 2/4 weeks if this is possible.

Thanks in advance!

Hi! I was on timolol and breast fed for ages. I haven't heard about whether the dorzolamide part of the co-sopt has any effect. You're not on steroids are you? That shot my pressures up.

You know about punctual occlusion to reduce systemic absorption of your eyedrops?

Hi there. It must be so frustrating not to be able to get info about breastfeeding and medication. It’s great to hear you are planning to breastfeed. How would you feel about contacting the drugs in breastmilk team (see link below) . They are a trained team of pharmacists who would be able to provide evidence-based information on medication and breastmilk.

Good luck! And all the best with the rest of your pregnancy, birth and beyond!

Hello. Cosopt is not normally a recommended drug while breastfeeding.

I would recommend speaking to your consultant again with your very valid concerns. The following info has been taken from the patient information leaflet that comes with Cosopt pf eyedrops.

If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if COSOPT PF will harm your

unborn baby. If you become pregnant while using COSOPT PF talk to your doctor right away.

Breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. It is not known whether dorzolamide passes into

your breast milk however, timolol has been detected in breast milk.

Talk to your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you use COSOPT PF.

hey, I am breastfeeding now and I have just been diagnosed and given Dorzolomide however all the information I have found says don’t breastfeed. Mainly due to lack of research. I am not taking the drops as I am waiting to speak to my ophthalmologist.

I was given this handy website yesterday though which has been brilliant to look up any medication or components of medication:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK5...

I hope this helps
