Eye pressure and hyperthyroid

HiI have been to the eye clinic today after a couple of problems with different drops which I had to stop using.

My pressure in both eyes is 22.

The Dr was puzzled as my pressure is fluctuating. He said he is not convinced it is Glaucoma as there is no nerve damage and my Fields test was 94%. He has put me down as Glaucoma suspect.

He has left me just on Monopost, which I have used for a few years and will see me again in 6 months.

I also have an overactive thyroid, for which I am taking Carbimazole. It is caused by a toxic goiter. I wondered if this could affect eye pressure?

Has anyone experienced this?

Hello there,I have Graves disease and had a total thyroidectomy in 2022 after being on carbimazole for 5 years.I also have thyroid eye disease and it was at an appointment for my TED that she said "your eyes look very bloodshot(it was normal for me).She took my pressures and it was 25 in one eye,26 in the other. My dad has glaucoma so I was referred to the glaucoma clinic. They have found no evidence of glaucoma, but said it was just raised pressures and I have been on 1 drop of monopost in each eye since then.My pressures have reduced and I go to the glaucoma clinic once a year for checks.

I have wondered if my thyroid problems have caused this.My TED was quite noticeable, bulging eyes, red, bloodshot and puffy around them.I wonder if the swelling caused the high pressure.

There is no-one else in our family with glaucoma only my dad.I suppose I 'll never really know for definite if the high pressures are connected to my thyroid problems but to me it's a bit of a coincidence. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. It's interesting to know about other people's experience. My thyroid problem is a multi nodule goiter, not Graves, but still Thyroid.

It is a coincidence, but I don't suppose we'll ever know.

I too am on one drop of Monopost each night and my pressures fluctuate between 19 and 22. At hospital visits.

Sorry, just something I thought of.Have you ever been checked for thyroid eye disease.(sometimes called TED) as you mentioned in one of your posts that you had red bags under your eyes.It is more common with overactive thyroid.

Hello, some studies have shown that there is a link between thyroid conditions and glaucoma, particularly thyroid eye disease (TED), which can increase the risk of developing glaucoma. Studies have shown that people with TED are more likely to be diagnosed with glaucoma compared to those without TED. But more research is being carried out on this. Best Wishes

hi, I read your post and thought I would reach out. I have high eye pressure which fluctuates ( apparently this is normal), mine can go up to around 26/7, however after previously being incorrectly diagnosed with glaucoma, which I challenged, after seeing a total specialist he told me this is incorrect and I did not have glaucoma.

I refused to take the original drops (advised by the first advisor), as I prefer natural interventions and researched diet and other natural avenues. Since I have taken all this on board myself I have got my pressure down to around 19/20 which is normal. One of the main things I take is Rutin which has been researched into bringing down eye pressure naturally. I take one natural tablet daily. I also eat lots of berries including Gogi berries, greens including broccoli, kale and spinach, Mediterranean diet with natural whole foods and root vegetables.

I also take the vitabiotics supplement Bilbury, Lutein and Zeaxanthin daily. I undertake eye exercises, one of which is staring at the holes in the leaves of trees at a distance.

Frankincense Essential oil is also good for bringing eye pressure down, you can rub it around temples etc.

I hope these help, if you had to take only one supplement, I would say take Rutin. This was also advised by another eye specialist who supported a more holistic approach to eye health. This is the supplement that has been evidenced to reduce eye pressure.

From what you say, your pressure is not extremely high in my view and there may be times when it is much lower but we only get tested once a year so it is difficult to assess this.

thanks

Jayne
