Last December, I was in a minor car accident that caused chronic dizziness, vertigo and loss of balance. I've been off work on long term medical leave, have spent 3000+ euro on treatment and consultants, the whole shebang.
After bouncing around a lot from one consultant to the next, my neurologist said that my brain is no longer interpreting signals from my vestibular system correctly, and described these as "functional" symptoms. Not actually sure if that means I have full blown FND or what, but this is the closest to a diagnosis I've come to so far.
Anyway, since the car accident was 100% not my fault (I was a passenger in a taxi), I was advised by a few people to talk to a lawyer about compensation, which I agreed to reluctantly. My lawyer is currently going through whatever the process entails, but when I told him about my neurologist's opinion, he didn't seem terribly optimistic. The impression I got was that courts/the injuries board like to hear about concrete, physical damage, not whatever is going on with me.
Has anyone ever heard of someone suing or making an insurance claim, based on FND symptoms following an accident, and being successful? At the very least, it would be nice to get all the money I've spent on consultant's fees and physiotherapist appointments back.

My fnd symptoms came about from a car accident (not my fault either) - not sure where you are based but I’m in Scotland.
The UK system in process of medical reports etc is a long traumatic time. It took 3 1/2 years to get compensated but even then by the time the government recouped the benefits I received etc , I was left with very little.
as you’ve said they want hard evidence and because I had a case of depression for 3 months years before the accident - that affected the case as they say fnd is linked to depression (don’t believe that!)
Anyway - when the lawyer presents to the other lawyers your symptoms they don’t have to show evidence they will be presenting symptoms and later on have to prove this by medical reports etc
So you MAY get compensated but in all honesty I wouldn’t bet on it. It’s a long process and genuinely I hated it as every ounce of my life was ripped apart by every medical team I saw and I left in a state each time .
When the process was over a huge weight was lifted and I don’t think there was always part of me worried “what if I get better” & “what if I don’t how will that affect the financial outcome”...
That’s a normal human nature for us to sometimes make things worse that little bit more than it is in order to get just that little bit more
My advice would be to settle with their first offer if that happens and just focus on getting better through your local doctor/hospital
Any more questions just direct message me
All the best
Andy
This was my own experience and not a medical reply or legal advice so don’t act on it without chatting to family and lawyer
Are you UK based ? I am a Solicitor specialising in this condition and I can confirm that compensation is awarded in the UK for FND caused by a car accident. If you want more information email me Robert.aylott@osborneslaw.com
