Taste and FND

Hi, I have had many weird and disabling symptoms for 6 years being at first diagnosed CFS but recently changed to FND. I was living like a 30 year old and in the space of a few months changed into a 90 year old !!My sense of taste has been affected since the Start, sweet things taste sour and vice versa savoury food can taste metallic, meat feels like I am eating twigs bananas feel like Wet cardboard. Plain water tastes sickly sweet as does the humble Rich Tea biscuit.

Anybody else having a similar experience?

Yes not recently but I've had random evenings when eating and not understanding how something can taste so different to me. Not consistently

Hi, I was diagnosed in 2019 with FND and I noticed a change with smell as well as taste. most of the time my taste buds are not working very well but its the smells that get me , we drink coffee and I don't get the same smell as I used to I get a lot of fishy smells which make me retch as I don't like fish. Food tastes of nothing really I just eat to live. I have mentioned this to the neurologist and GP but have had no input about it , its just something you have to adapt and live with. good luck for the future. kevin

Covid can have that effect that too.

I think sometimes it takes time for our smells and taste to return back to normal. I am sure there is a lot of info out there, its nothing I have experienced personally.

But with the smells, you could try a graded approach, see how long you can manage. With the tastes, you could add another food/ingredient with it (that you still enjoy and slowly reduce the other food. Or elimate it altogether, our taste buds change as we get older.

I was once bought a smoothy maker to experiment with to get to like certain vegetables etc as I don't like the taste or textures of many. I am confident if I continued to have them, I would have eventually appreciated them.
