A recent article published by the Prostrate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) May 6, 2020 claims that understanding and treating oligometastatic prostrate cancer is a priority for PCFA and for researchers with each trial building on earlier discoveries and hopefully getting closer to breakthroughs that could significantly change the game for men with advanced prostrate cancer.
The article notes that the increasing use of PSMA PET scans means that metastatic prostrate cancer can be detected and targeted more effectively possibly delaying both the progression and the need for ADT. Links throughout the article refer to previous relevant articles and various clinical trials.
Thanks for posting this Marnie. It is good to see some of the research from Oz and compare outcomes. Oligometastatic PCa is a term that is evolving with newer scans. The real question is will we see people achieve a cure with MDT for oliometastatic patients?...certainly long remissions are possible... For those with no untreated lesions as determined by the better scans, the possibility exists...Also, I know of several men on these forums that were oligometastatic by one of the newer scans being treated with ADT, Zytiga, and prednisone while undergoing SBRT. Will they have 5 year remissions or longer or a cure?? Let us hope....
Yes Dave it's very encouraging to know that there are specific trials and considerable research taking place for this type of PC and indeed we do hope for a brighter future ahead with, at the very least, longer remissions.
Are we seeing a period similar to breast cancer when early detection with the newer scans provides an opportunity for a cure?? We are at a time when drugs discovered for other cancers are "crossing over" to be used in prostate cancer...PARP inhibitors are the most recent drugs... The treatment landscape is changing rapidly for all cancers...What we need in my opinion is funding at a level of breast cancer....see below:
