Oh dear, sounds like the reporters need to go on an equality and diversity course! Been on several in my time and they all make the point you've made. Then again, it wouldn't be nearly sensationalist enough to suggest that people using wheelchairs are normal now would it? You rant away x
My husband is in a wheelchair...he does not find it offensive to be classed as wheelchair bound. Without it he would be housebound. He feels there ought to be different wheelchair categories!
I personally think you've hit the nail on the head there Cat, there could be many categories relating to people who use wheelchairs.
Newspaper article titles are designed to attract our attention to get us to read them, saying "wheelchair bound" makes the article more hard hitting. If they printed "man using wheelchair", the article perhaps wouldn't have the same impact. I think they call it poetic license, which of course doesn't take into account equality, diversity or discrimination.
I have to agree cat53 ... With the way benefits are given...Or not given these days, to simply categorise everyone as a wheelchair user gives no indication of how much they depend on that wheelchair, I know when my arthritis struck over night I was indeed wheelchair bound, couldn't get in or out of it by myself... Without it i would have been stuck in bed I now class myself as very as lucky as i have I managed to progress onto walking sticks

my brother is a tetraplegic and relies on his wheelchair for getting around all the time , he does not like the terms i quoted. But then again he calls himself a cripple which is a term i hate as i was taunted with it so much as a child
