Hi, I've just joined. Does anyone else suffer with really bad cystitis?

Or ibruprofen an anti inflamatory. (May be you already know) sorry if do but you just asking and not giving much away lol.

Drink plenty of water, cranberry juice or Barley water.

To flush your system.

They will ask about medicines so check 1st before taking any OTC meds.

Yes i suffered majorly was on antibiotics for months and months 15 yr ago

Or 14 yrs.

now i have issues every month before my period and just take pain relief.

thanks so much for that advice. I have recently had 3 really bad attacks with lots of blood in my wee etc. I was given short courses of anti-b's which were effective, but it came back. I had another attack about 10 days ago and was given ab's but this time it is still there, not very painful but it keeps me awake at night. I'm going to my doc next week to get it sorted out. I've been to so many hospitals in different counties when I'm on hol. I just hate it. Poor you having to be on ab's for such a long time. I thought Caneston was just for thrush???

Thank you Jessam. So sorry you've had to suffer with this for so long, I just can't imagine that I'm not sure what a bladder/kidney test would be. I've only had urine tests when I get a bad attack. What did you find helps the most, Jessam? xx

I too take a antibiotic at night as I have had so many infections . I had a bladder operation so I know that counts for some of the problems, being sixty and past the menopause is another cause I think. I drink cranberry juice and take disolvable co codamol which help with the pain and discomfort. One of the joys of being a woman I guess

Thank you wednesday. So your operation was for something other than this problem? Will you have to take that anti b forever now? I'm 56 and I think I'm at the tail end of the menopause. I don't really mind what I take. I just need to get some relief from this. Thank you so much for your advice xx

Not something I suffer with now, did suffer with it so many years I have forgotten. I used a product called Cystopurin, not sure if it still on the markey but it was good. Bit spooky though as it turns your urine blue lol. But my daughter has had so many water infections that she now has to go to Urology to see what is happening. and her bladder is not working properley as she can hardly pee so it is backing up into her kidneys so she is back on antibiotics. I had to take a sample over and the head nurse said it was as bad as it could get, everything that is NOT supposed to be in the urine is in there. Got to wait for call now to see what lab tests show up. Oh by the way, welcome to the site xxxxx

Hi Ozzygirl, wow your family has really gone through it haven't they. Poor you and your poor daughter, it makes me feel that I'm moaning about nothing. I hope they manage to sort her problem out and find a treatment that gets rid of it for her.

I suffer with bouts of this - I'm glad you are going back to your GP because sometimes bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics making them ineffective - perhaps they chop it up or spit it out so it can't do any damage amongst other ways of basically making it useless! So perhaps you need a different one

( if you don't complete the full course that can lead to a higher probability of the bacteria having the ability to do this due to lower concentrations of antibiotics and survival of the fittest bacteria so it's important that you always take the antibiotics as you should - you are probably unlucky I'm afraid and probably took everything just so)

Anyway my bacteria were not sensitive to trimethoprim when I had bouts but seemed to quite like co-amoxiclav - if your doctor took a wee sample he will be able to see if this is s problem!

Nitrofurantoin is a popular drug choice also but sometimes can be less effective if your kidneys are not working well even if your bacteria are sensitive to this drug do its one to be aware of also.

If the cystitis happens lots like it did for me the GP may refer you to have a bladder scan to see that you are emptying it when you pee - any residual can grow bugs if it's there long enough - also they just like to check out your water works.

Cystopurin is still on the market I believe - it is one of a few brands of sachets containing potassium citrate or sodium citrate which brings the pH of your urine back to normal- thus stopping that horrible burning feeling - its good to feel relief but if you have a true infection it will not kill bacteria - please be aware some people should not take this e.g those with high blood pressure please check with a pharmacist if this is ok for you.

Like the others have said cranberry and barley are good - apparently they work to chop the flagella off of the bacteria to stop them sticking to the wall of your bladder. You can buy cranberry capsules too which are good I got some from a well known health food shop.

Keep drinking lots!!!! This is very important as it keeps flushing your system making sure that fresh wee only is in your bladder - you will notice your wee will become clear almost losing its yellow tinge! It might also get a few of those bacteria blighters out.

Last winter I kept getting cystitis and was put on antibiotics which helped, because it kept happening, my GP gave me two prescriptions, one to hang onto if it came back and save me from being in pain while waiting for an appointment. So far this winter fingers crossed I have been clear, but it is the very cold weather for too long that causes it and it is all part of Fibromyalgia

Hi Linda, that sounds brilliant. I really want my doctor to give me a sort of 'kit' that I can take with me. 4 times now I have had to visit foreign hospitals in the middle of the night because I'm in so much pain with loads of blood in my urine. If I could have some a/b's and pain killers I could get rid of it before it really takes hold. Thank you so much x

Yes I get it a lot, I am currently on antibiotics now and sat here in a nappy as it effects my incontinance. My GP want's me to go back to the specilist who might pass me on to a urologist and probably a gyno as well. From what I gather UTI's and their symptoms presenting without infection is quite common with Fibro and/or M.E. Look up Angela Kilmartin, her books are both sympethtic and informative, there is nothing more empowering when one feels helpless than doing something to help yourself. Good luck Ladies.
