Has anyone read about the changes to Council Tax which will deffo affect people with Disabilities? The changes start April 2012. If anyone can put light to this I would be grateful. This is another attack on vulnerable people!

From what I've heard it's going to affect pretty much anyone who gets CT benefit, apart from the elderly.

People who would normally get all of their council tax paid for them , will be expected to pay at least 20 % of it themselves .

Here's some info on Council Tax and Disability -

direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPe...

I heard the rules are changing next year Liberty, that link doesn't mention that . Do you know if it's true ?

I will look into it and see if I can find any info on that, thanks Helen.

I found this in another forum, not sure if it's right, so will keep looking for info to verify, so please bear in mind this might not be entirely accurate. Please check with your local council who will be able to tell you how the changes next year will affect you personally -

"Council tax benefit will no longer exist from April 2013. It will be replaced by "local council tax discount scheme" run by your local council and funding from the Government will be reduced by 10%.This only affects people born after 5th Oct 1951 so people of working age.

This then equates to an 18% reduction in benefit".

The link below explains Universal Credit which replaces some benefits from April 2013 - here's some info - this info is 100% correct.

dwp.gov.uk/policy/welfare-r...

The following benefits are changing:

Disability Living Allowance will be replaced by Personal Independence Payment from 2013

Council Tax Benefit will be abolished in April 2013 and replaced by a system of localised support

Pension Credit will be amended from October 2014 to include help with eligible rent and dependent children

Social Fund is also being reformed to introduce new local assistance.

I had a letter from the local council about this. It said exactly what Liberty said. I cant believe how much we are being bled dry by this government. Anything else you can think of Mr cameron? While he sits in luxury skimming off expenses here there and everywhere, along with his little friends.

Hi All what amazes me about this is as in my case i live with my partner and 9 year old son and we are claiming job seekers allowance which means we are already living on the minimum amount a family is allocated by the law so how can they now decide to take money from us when we are already struggling to exist ? i fear lots of families will be pushed beyond the limit and begin to break the law just to be able to live :-( x
