Hi Tofty - that's a good question!

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) is an illness with many names. Within the NHS it is commonly called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS or CFS/M.E.). Sometimes it is known as Myalgic Encephalopathy or diagnosed as Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVFS). M.E. is a long-term (chronic) fluctuating illness that causes symptoms affecting many body systems, more commonly the nervous and immune systems.

Recognised symptoms of M.E. may include persistent exhaustion (‘fatigue’), muscle and/or joint pain, sleep disturbance, ’flu-like symptoms such as headache, sore throat, painful lymph nodes, dizziness and/or nausea and problems with memory and concentration.

Chronic fatigue syndrome/ME is a condition where you have long-term disabling tiredness (fatigue). Most people with chronic fatigue syndrome/ME also have one or more other symptoms such as muscular pains, joint pains, disturbed sleep patterns, poor concentration, headaches. The cause is not known. Treatments that may help in some cases (but not all) include a programme of graded exercise therapy (GET) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

CFS stands for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Chronic means persistent or long-term.

ME stands for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. Myalgic means muscle aches or pains. Encephalomyelitis means inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.

As you can see from the above, there is a lot of overlapping of symptoms between the two conditions. They are usually banded together. When I was diagnosed with CFS, my actual diagnosis was CFS/ME.

My fella has c.f.s and i have m.e yet he got told they were different yet i got they were one illness.its a illness thats shroudded in mystery.in america lots is known about it and they are morw sympathetic.

I no this coz i get emails from a mr wainwright a dr who has m.e and aids.hes travels all tound world doing seminars.and sends me links and info.

He told me all this.good luck.

I got told six years ago id be in a wheelchair coz of my m.e and degentive disc disease.im not.

Having been finally diagnosed, after about 12 years of unexplained but severe and worrying symptoms, I have Fibro and ME. Here is a website that I found very useful, I think being educated about what I have makes it easier to deal with. hfme.org/
