Causes
Hi Finlay
they say that it can start from a viris or from major stress. i have also read somewhere that it could be something to do with genes - think this was an american website (dr) they are more advanced in fm that what we are over here.
Hope this helps you a bit.
Hi jojo,
Thanks for taking the time with your thoughts and comments - the only thing that I can think of that might have triggered mine (other than having cancer 5 years ago) is approximately 2 years ago I had a terriibe pain under my right ribs. It was that painful I ended up in A+E. My dr thought it was shingles but I never did get a rash. It lasted for weeks and weeks then 6 months later my gut/bowel started causing problems then all fibro symptoms followed other than these two episodes I have been very healthy. As far as I'm aware, no other family member suffers with fibro!!
Thanks again xx
Hi Finlay
So sorry to hear that you have suffered cancer. this could have been your trigger and then the shingles and the other problems that you have suffered. My fm just seemed to come on overnight i can not recall a trigger for mine and it started just before my 18th over 14yrs ago, it took me 4 yrs to get diagnosed. My latest relapse has come from stress and changes in work even though i didnt feel stressed my body must have been and then in march it had enough!!!!!!
Good luck in your search for answers.
Take care
Jo x
Hey Jo,
I thought I had it tough waiting 15 months or so - I think it's terrible you had to wait 4 years for your diagnosis and being so young too, it must have been a terrible worry for you I'm sorry to hear about your recent relapse through stresses at work - I believe stress is one of the biggest killers and was probably due to my cancer too if I'm honest. My daughter is in a very busy job with two young daughters, I keep asking her to think about changing jobs but the way things are at the moment there isn't that many jobs around unfortunately.
I had a good chat with the consultant today and yes your right, the cancer and shingles/neuro pain probably triggered my fm.
Hope your feeling better soon.
Take good care xx
Hey Finlay, gentle hugs.
My first blog on here might be able to answer that question.

From a virus to the abuse to a car accident - I've had them all!

Hi Cadee,
Thank you sooooo much for that - after all the pain and suffering for the past couple of years (not as much as you, poor thing) it sums up just about everything to do with fibro and how I feel. It's brilliant and will have to take a copy of it.
Love and hugs xx
hi!
the FM specialist i saw who confirmed FM, said it was caused by 3 ways. a life changing stress incident, a virus or an accident.
xx
Many thanks westgate, I guess getting cancer mearly 5 years ago was a significant life changing stress incident? I thought I dealt with it very well, had surgery and back to work. I have slowly gone down hill over the past couple of years though - should have some answers at my first Rhematology appt today.
Thanks for taking the time xx
HI finlay,
I had a very trauamatic birth and she survived but has problems since and i thought i dealt with it very well and even my family couldnt beleive how strong i was. The doctors think this is why i have fibro now due to all that stress. I actually think that is why too.
My partner had cancer too so that was stressful but i wasnt right before he got it.
hugs, kel xxxx
Hi Kel,
You certainly have been through it, just having a baby is stressful enough but with all the problems on top it's no wonder your body is suffering. The shock of your partner having cancer was probably the final straw
Hope you are taking time out for yourself every now and then too.
Love and hugs xx
For me it started with severe stress - my health went haywire, I am left with ME/Fibromyalgia.
So sorry to hear you had severe stress - I believe it has the worst impact on our bodies.
Hope you have got a good gp, and that you are getting some relief from medication. x
It's often a different route in each person, but there are a number of factors that can be put together differently for different people:
* Genetic susceptibility, though many people/families are unaware that they may have this. This can be linked to Hypermobility which has a definite genetic component - hypermobility has a poor recognition rate so older members of the family in particular may well be hypermobile without knowing it. Family members with other central sensitisation conditions (IBS, migraine, etc) may be another clue towards susceptibility.
* Hypermobility, considered to be a risk factor for getting Fibro.
* Positional Cervical Cord Compression, perhaps due to Hypermobility, trauma (may explain why whiplash comes up so often when talking about triggers for Fibro) or wear and tear with age.
* Pre-existing (even if undiagnosed) chronic pain or rheumatic condition, such as Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis or painful periods.
* Trauma, such as whiplash, other injuries, or operations.
* Severe illness.
* Emotional stress, especially if prolonged.
Many people can identify a triggering event or series of events, but there doesn't have to be one.
i think it is neurological, go to neurologynow.com, there is a article called "is fibromyalgia real"? don't let the title put you off, i found it a very interesting read mine started from a bad whiplash injury in a dentists chair during a really bad extraction...
Hi electricjaws,
Thanks for the article, it's very interesting and informative...
That was some dentist who gave you whiplash, are they still practising????
Take care x
stupidly enough i didn't sue him,he was in a private practice,he was doing n.h.s work over the xmas new year break(2000) i went back to him after it happened and he sent the nurse out of the room and said to me "it's your word against mine,it is your own fault i told you to hang on to the chair" i was 8 stone at the time and he was approx 20 stone and tugging hard, thats why i ended up in a sittting position then the tooth came away and i crashed back down in the chair,he's retired now and really rich, he wrecked my life.....
Hi, I was told I had fibro 6 months after giving birth to my son because of the trauma. Having said that, it was a relatively easy birth with no complications. I have had 4 car accidents in the past 20 years with some long-term injuries so I think I've had it long before giving birth and the pain I was experiencing was due to these accidents. I could be wrong though because I have never felt fatigue like I do now! x
Hi There,
So sorry to hear you have have long term injuries from the car accidents. It was probably under the surface before you had your son and didn't realise
I understand about the fatigue, I too have never experienced it so bad not even when I had cancer. I think we tend to put it off as being tired, age, etc and then it's too late because it's got hold of us by then.
Love and hugs xx
