I haven't actually been diagnosed with TMJ, but it's a possibility...I have pain which stems from jaw joint, upward across my head, then down my jaw, neck, shoulder and down my arm to my elbow.

GP says it's clenching my jaw in my sleep.

Oh and i haven't found a painkiller that helps yet.

Hope you're feeling better soon xxxxx (gentle hugs)

Merill, have you ever been properly assessed for myofascial trigger points? I ask because I know you posted recently about recurrent migraine and myofascial trigger points can be a cause of recurrent migraine, TMJD and some sinus problems. They are also very common alongside Fibro.

Thanks guys. I have been diagnosed with TMJ, but they didnt offer any treatment. Susequent to a sinus infection mid december which left me in constant pain. And 3 courses anti bios later, which have screwed my gut, I am going it alone on line.

No I havent been assessed for myofascial TPs but I have myo pain I know.

How would I get this though please?

You can get your GP to ask if one of the physios at your local hospital can assess for myofascial trigger points. Or see an osteopath or myofascial release therapist privately.

I had terrible pain thought it was my sinuses, across my face, jaw and top of head following down to my right side of my face. The pain was getting really bad and after visiting the GP I went to the dentist just to get my teeth checked out. She had a look and said teeth perfect, but I am clenching my teeth when I am a sleep. Makes sense really as I also have restless leg syndrome. My dentist told me to do a few face stretches when I am going to sleep and she made a gum shield which I have to wear at night. Guess what it works. No more pain at the top of my head and no more pain in my face. So go to your dentist and ask could they do a gum shield for you. My dentist said if it gets worse she would give a letter to my gp requesting a ENT clinic at the hospital. Good luck it worked for me. xxx

I have been to my dentist 5 times this year already. He says my teeth are fine. I had a splint from Hospital few years ago and didnt help, but they still say its TMJ. Apparently some of the clenching can be worse in the daytime and splint no use then. Could you maybe outline the stretches please. I am going to ask to be referred again. Thank you.

I was diagnosed many years ago with TMJ and was given a splint to wear at night,i don't like wearing it as it makes you salivate excessively, yuk! i was finally diagnosed with Fibro last Autumn,i do still grind my teeth when i'm tired and my dentist notices the grinding marks! perhaps go and see your dentist about having a splint measured and made for you(it's a painless procedure!) I wish you well Take care xxx

I was given a splint for TMJ and misalignment of my jaw which causes it to click every time i open my mouth.

Della is right i find i salivate a lot with it and i still clench my teeth, sometimes so hard i think i am going to go through the splint. But it haasnt improved at all. I do the mouth exercises but it still as bad.

Now my sinuses constantly feel blocked and i am losing my sense of smell.

The specialist signed me off as said nothing else they can do i have to learn to live with the pain.

Hope you get some relief though.

xx

I got diagnosed with TJM around 10 yrs ago (way before being diagnosed with fibro) my dentist said I was bruxing and would grind my teeth away. I got sent to see a consultant who gave me a set of exercises and told me to give up classical singing which was making face pain worse. I had a course of hypno to stop bruxing in my sleep and still do exercises to loosen my jaw. I can feel it tensing and try to relax my face. It is difficult to relax when your whole body is in pain and you are anxious and depressed sometimes. Try to get some guided relaxation tapes to put on before bed or when you are tense to help muscle relaxation. Good luck.

i wear a gum shield-given by dentist and also take diazepam at bed time

Thank you. The don't seem to want to give me a night guard. What strength Valium do you have. Does it make you groggy ?

Now the gp gave me morphine. But people say it makes you sick. And doesn't help tmj

I am getting some trigger point treatment. Bit nervous. Terrified anything might make me worse.
