I am 63 years old and have a few illnesses that make me think it could be fibromyalgia.
I have recurring shingles for the last 12 years as regular as every 6 weeks at it’s worst, I have had every vaccine and every medication, the only control recently has been on antiviral tablets for 9 months.
I also have had 4 DVTs the more recent ones have left me with severe nerve damage and muscle weakness to my calves and feet.
I have suffered for 13 years with osteoarthritis in numerous joints.
I usually wake up extremely stiff and sore.
I am already taking most of the medication prescribed for Fibromyalgia.
More recently I have been suffering with an enlarged prostrate I’m awaiting surgery but still suffer with pain all around my Prostrate ,my hip, groin and have constant UTI’s.
My GP has referred me to the MS clinic but mostly to rule it out, in her words she doesn’t know what’s going on !
Im constantly in pain which seems all over my body and constantly fatigued although I put this down to my medication and have very poor sleep.
I have had tinnitus for 18 years.
Fibromyalgia has never been mentioned as a possible cause but I’m ticking all the on line boxes.
Has anyone had similar symptoms and a diagnosis.
Thank you Peter

Hi Peter so sorry to hear of your situation. As Fibro is usually diagnosed by excluding other causes of symptoms your history may make that more difficult to isolate and identify as you have a number of conditions that cause joint and neuropathic pain and associated fatigue. In my case blood tests galore, x-rays and scans were all OK so I guess diagnosis was relatively easy. Even so I do wonder if I have chronic fatigue as well.
The fact that you have these other conditions doesn’t of course mean you haven’t got Fibro. As you will see here, many suffers have, like yourself, a lot of co morbidities. But it may well make diagnosis that bit trickier.
Hi thanks for the reply I expect that’s exactly what my GP would say.
I also have had many tests over the years but the lack of positive diagnoses for most of my illnesses does lead me to think it could be Fibromyalgia.
I did have a consultant say my leg symptoms could be spinal or vascular disease. So at least different possible causes are being considered and investigated.
Hi Peter, Oh dear, things must be getting you down... Sounds like it's possibly fibromyalgia. It's an odd thing as it affect people in different ways and sometime days are worse than others. If you are not getting enough sleep you're bound to feel exhausted. Perhaps some of the meds aren't doing you much good?. To be honest, I take a little as possible.... mainly because a lot of medications just don't agree with me.
I notice you say you keep getting shingles flare ups... do you mean shingles or herpes? The new shingrix vaccine is supposed to be better than the old one ... that's if you haven't had it already. I think you get 2 doses of it? The old one was zostervax.
This is a bit of a long shot re: the re-occurring shingles, but I'll suggest it anyway as you might find it beneficial if you find aciclovir helpful.. Bearing in mind, shingles and herpes are closely related.
I used to get regular herpes outbreaks and still get them occasionally until I read that an amino acid called arginine actually promotes the virus, whereas lysine helps prevent it. Both amino acids are commonly found in food stuffs. I found a list of foods with their % of lysine and arginine on the 'net so I know what I should or shouldn't eat . I also bought myself a tub of lysine powder so I can take some when I get feel an outbreak coming and it seems to nip it in the bud. If you do decide to try it, don't take too much as it can upset your tummy. If you are interested in trying that approach I can look out the website address for you so you can print off a list of foodstuffs for reference.
Dear Peter,That sounds awful, you are waiting for an operation, but in the meantime, you should demand to be referred to a specialist at the hospital regarding the prostrate pain. Fibromyalgia is difficult to be diagnosed for, and anything can kick it off, such as nerve damage, medication, stress, inactivity, depression. It drains you of energy, and gives you muscle and bone aches. This can flare up too. Get diagnosed. Good luck with everything.
Hi thanks I’m not one who usually shares but needs must and I’m so glad I have as the replies are so helpful and understanding of what we all go through.
