Me too, was under the hospital for 4 years trying to get answers as they lost all my initial information when moving buildings apparently and then because of covid. But I was never told it was connected with fibromyalgia so that is interesting to hear from a few replies
I can relate. I had a Barium Swallow study and was diagnosed with esophageal dismotility. Doesn't stop me worrying that it is something more sinister. Especially with the muscle cramps, stiffness, twitches etc.
HiI've had problems with neck and shoulder pain as well as many other fibromyalgia issues. I have struggled with swallowing for a couple of years. I seem to go through bouts of it and then it's OK. I start to regurgitate my food so I've learned to stop eating when this happens otherwise I start choking.. not very pleasant.
My sister and I both have Fibro and have issues swallowing.
I have a CT scan of my next today, and a Barium Swallow, so hopefully I will get some answers.
I did ask my GP whether this was related to Fibro and was told no, but it seems strange that we both have this issue, and others on here do too.
I get worried about eating as my food can become stuck, and water does not push it down, it just get stuck with the food. My throat becomes swollen and sore, and my neck also hurts.
I have had this problem going back 28yrs maybe longer. Had my esophagus stretched several times during endoscopies. One time they stuck a red rubber tube down my throat which that woke me up!😳It hit the gag reflex. I had barium swallows during X-rays, gastric emptying test etc. over the years was told it was esophageal spasms. I even a couple of swallowing tests and was told not to drink from a straw. Anyway fast forward to July 2018 when the right doctor ordered the right test-esophageal mobility test and the RN who was doing the test showed me what was happening every time I swallowed. My whole entire esophagus would clamped down at the same time. This was what was causing the sharp stabbing pain and lock down on even letting water or chicken rice soup go down and the increased amount of production of phlegm that I had to spit it out into the trash. The first time this happened was in 93 my 18mo old daughter started screaming at the exact same time I felt the sharp stabbing pain. We were eating the chicken rice soup and I ended up standing over the trash can spitting up the soup and mostly phlegm. Sorry for the graphics but this is achalasia. The test for it is esophageal mobility test. It can take 15 minutes to 2hrs depending upon how well you can swallow on command and only once each time with a small tube (smaller then the one they use for the 24hr gastric reflex test) down your throat down to the end of the esophagus. It can be treated with Botox or surgery. I wasn’t really thrilled with either choice but after about 6 months I decided to go with the surgery. It cut back on the frequency of this clamping down but they prescribed nitroglycerin sublinguals to dissolve under the tongue and it relaxes the esophagus. No this isn’t a fibromyalgia thing.
Hi ,I have difficulty to swallow and I have hiccups neck pain ,the doctor not contacted with fibromyalgia but they keep investigating l had l fews test,if l find what's, if is related with fibro I'll let you know.
Yes this has been a ongoing issues for me and eating chicken is an issues or anything that is dry. After tests it was confirmed I had dysphagia which can be caused by some medication or illness. Perhaps ask you GP for a Throat test to confirm these details as it can be many things. Read the side effects of your drugs to confirm its not one of them. I have to watch what I drink and eat as there are times it just won't go down. Make sure your GP doesn't just put it down to fibromyalgia to many do that without taking note of the real symptoms. Good luck and take care . 🙂
Yes I get bouts of struggling to swallow food, I have to grab for a drink to get it down as I just suddenly loose the ability to clear the food from my throat. I also have a hiatus hernia so can often feel like it is bulging into throat which I presume it may be the pressure. I also wondered if it was anxiety but it isn’t at the times that I am anxious either.
I am glad to see this thread to see that other experience the same. I also get a lot of neck pain with bone spurs so also could be related 🤣. Sometimes I feel like I am falling apart 🤣
This is the kind of feeling that I get in my throat and neck.It feels like swelling and pressure with the burning.I was told a few years ago after a ct scan that I had a bulge in my spine and some degeneration so I was wondering if it could also be related to that.I am currently waiting for my rheumatology appointment to come through so I will try and get some answers as my GP just prescribed more painkillers .I do know the pain and burning is getting unbearable and making me feel so fed up.
Hi. Yes, me too. I wonder if they are related. It's interesting your GP sees a link. I've just looked into this, a pub med report 2023 says there's emerging evidence individuals with fibro often experience eating, drinking and swallowing problems like odnophagia and dysphagia. However, it maybe worth getting it checked out again, incase its something else. Hope you find some relief soon.
