Duoloxetine
Hi. Yes. I'm a 60 year old female. I have gained weight but not as much as I put on with pregabalin. I'm on.a diet now. The serious weight gain (over 2 stone) was unfortunately caused by pregablin. Duloxetine is not as bad. Hard at my age to lose the weight as I have mobility issues. I find dulexotine the best I have tried so far. Good luck with everything x
Ty for replying I'm just concerned as I really struggle to lose weight I've been putting off trying them but I need pain relief it's to much now
Hi Jo. I think you need to weigh up the pros and cons. There are a whole range of other pain killers out there. I find dulexotine helps me sleep a lot better. I have spoken to the pain clinic today and I'm going to ask for a smaller dose in the morning. I fractured my back and femur in my right leg. My back is giving me awful pain so I'm going to try and get an additional smaller dose to take if I go out. Walking - can't go too far now and have to use a crutch. Walking is painful.
Maybe give it a go and if it doesn't suit you switch to something else. Dulexotine is also an anti-depressant so it does help me with depression, pain (not fully, nothing does really) and sleeping is much better too.
Good luck. Best wishes Jo

Hi i have been on duloxetine for about 8 months now and i did gain a few pounds but nothing major, these are better than anything else i’ve tried, maybe worth trying?
I'm on low dose combination therapy , so Duloxetine, Pregabalin and Paracetamol three times a day.It totally normal to put on a few pounds with a medication because of the affect that the medications can have on your metabolism and sugar balance.
Some of the weight gain that can happen isn't always because of the medication but because the reason we take the medication in the first place has also caused us to be less active or our diet might have changed and include more fat and sugar becausecif cravings while we flare.
So yes , while on many medications you can expect a weight gain from the drug alone of anything between 1-6pounds , which may be temporary or last as long as you take a medication of any sort, even certain herbals and supplements . Also , it is considered an exceptable weight gain if you gain around 10pounds if you are also less active or mobile because of your symptoms.
Personally , the benefit to taking my medications , not just my fibromyalgia meds but the ones for my cardiac, migraine and digestive issues was worth a small gain in weight.
It gave me back more quality of life , reduced pain and fatigue and gave me the ability to be more mobile and because I can now exercise more much of the weight I gained before starting the medication I also lost too.
One way to manage the weight gain on medication is to look at your diet to help improve your insulin balance , preventing those sugar swings and redistribution of fat.
Drink the recommended water to help reduce inflammation, bloating and remove toxins.
Keep sugar for occasional treats. Avoid processed foods and artificial sweeteners.
Eat a varied nutrient rich diet with a good amount of quality protein , vegetables , fruit and soluble fibre.
Eat healthy fats in moderation and foods with good cholesterol,
Reduce carbohydrates but not to unhealthily restrictive levels below the bodies daily metabolic needs which are quite common on certain trending diets .
Just choose your. small portions of carbs wisely from low G.I sources like potatoes with skins, brown or wild rice, wholemeal pasta , wholegrain and seeded bread, beans and pulses , wholegrains and some fruit.
I find five smaller portions of food a day rather than three big meals helps with digestion , IBS and fatigue.
Basically a sustainable " Diet for Life " rather than a restrictive weight loss regime.
My husband is a Type 1 Diabetic and uses the same diet.
Hope that helps with your decision, you may even find after an initial few weeks on Duloxetine you could be like my daughter and myself and lose weight after an initial weight gain. Take care , Bee
Hi, sorry to hear your in pain.I have put weight in with Duloxitine bit not as much as I gained with pregabalin,
Unfortunately pain got the better of me and I now take both and battle with my weight due to my mobility.
Good luck x
Hello
I put on a frightening amount of weight with Amitriptyline and Norotriptyline - with neither assisting the (v severe) pain but Duloxetine has been life changing.
I had a rocky start - the first 3.5 weeks I was spaced out and could not sleep. I can on here and someone suggested it could be that they switched me overnight so I had Norotriptyline in system still.
Anyway - spoke to doc and he said - Duloxetine is one that builds so we won’t know for between 4 to six weeks.
Two days before the four week mark it was like a switch flipping and I think 40% of pain was gone. I also have hypermobility and OA so was in an almost bedbound state.
I have spent the summer swimming and even walking along beaches etc - I could not even get in the car before or climb stairs.
I have tackled the amitriptyline weight by stopping alcohol in the week and cutting carbs, increasing fibre - and this has been v effective for me. I also have PCOS so gain weight easily and losing it is hard work.
Anyway - that’s my story, we are all so different. Wishing you well and keep us posted on this thread. May help with the initial strange symptoms (i did not sleepfor 4 nights but now sleep like a baby!)
x
Ty it's good to get different experiences I have decided to give it a go when I finally get appointment with doctors
This is really encouraging to read Ellenindigo . I’m gradually weaning off amitriptyline at the moment (from 90mg) and it has been a rough ride but I start duloxetine next week. I have fibro, hypermobile EDS and various other conditions that cause pain. Duloxetine is the only thing I have left to try so I’m very hopeful. I have read multiple time that it’s being increasingly prescribed for hypermobility/EDS and fibro (with moderate success).
jojotom I’m about to switch to duloxetine as I say above. Amitriptyline lost effect for me after 3 years of a high dose and I’ve gained a lot of weight which is killing my joints. My GP has said that in her experience duloxetine isn’t problematic as regards weight gain. Hopefully it’ll be a positive switch for us both. Do come back and let us know how you get on with it 🤞🏻
I did put on weight but for me personally the tablet does it’s job for anxiety x
