Constipation ....

Sooooo, while there are some things which are considered "unmentionable", they are often the things where a chat can be very helpful. Many of us are on heavy pain medications, most of which cause constipation. Personally, I can go eight days and end up with nausea and stomach pain. Yes, I have tried everything the doctor offered and a patient needs to be careful taking drugs for this as it can end up with a "lazy bowel" which stops working properly. I did some research into natural methods - many of them don't work. I have found two natural methods which work well, don't interact negatively with most medical drugs, and aren't expensive. Talked with some of my clinic patients and they have found them helpful. Now, if you have the constipation problem and have found something which helps then pretty please, give us your insights!!

Syrup of Figs. A teaspoon a day.

Cod Liver Oil. Large capsule every third day (careful, as too much too quick and you have the opposite problem!)

Hi! Had the problems from early days, resolved the problem with 32, now 70. I take every day a small quantity of boiled wheat grains. The hull is cellulose, which preserves the humidity and makes things easier to transport. For me, it works for the past 38 years, it is natural, it is addition to food (I take it as the last meal, in the evening), it also contains vitamin E and B-complex, so very useful.

After I lost good teeth, I mill the grains with the machine, add sugar and milled walnuts, and some cinnamon for the taste. Easy to prepare, low costs,... Vitamin E is known to be precious for the body - maybe it is the reason I look younger than my generation and am in perfect health (except for mild AF).

All the best!

oh the dreaded impaction, very very painful, they had me on laxido, and very strong cocodomol painkillers for the ultra sound, they just did not touch the pain.

eating fruit, lots of apple sauce no sugar, due to not pruning trees.

I miss fig biscuits being gf, 😉

personally I’m lactose intolerant, but you can buy lactase liquid otc, it’s pure sugar, my son is forever constipated and finds this a quick method, I hope you have a sweet tooth if you try it.

I get prescribed Fybogel for this because I take co-codamol. I find it does help because if I don’t take it, I regret it! I hope you find something that helps ❤️

I would add please remember to drink enough water & make sure you're eating enough fibre. Avoid processed foods & eat, wherever possible, wholegrain foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta, cereals & brown rice; they're better for you in general, & I feel have more taste.

Wherever possible, increase your vegetable & fruit intake, & stay as active as possible!

hi LhasaMomma, constipation is probably some of the worst pain I’ve had to deal with. I’m on a lot of strong meds hence the constipation to try and rectify this I’m on 30ml twice a day of Lactose + 1 to 2 tablets of Senna and even then I still have to help manually excavate.

Sending gentle hugs

I use Inulin (baked into a biscuit with Almonds and ground Linseeds) and Physillium (?) husks in capsule form at night - with LOTS of water. (I was having to get up to pee anyway.... ) Co-codamol is def the worst for me.

I did have some problems early on not helped by the fact that I was eating a lot of chocolate. But gradually I became more and more of a herbivore, though a chicken or cow standing still was in serious jeopardy and still is.

Grinding my way through pounds of green acreage seems to have helped with that problem and strangely or perhaps not its opposite condition. It is still a controlling influence of when and when I cannot go out and I still carry a clean up kit but thankfully I have been lucky for the past few months.

It seems eating half a produce department a week does have its benefits, though my CO2 production has probably gone up quite a bit. burp!

Hi, I too am on medication that can make me constipated. I am prescribed Cosmocol which I usually take once, sometimes twice a day. The dose can be 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. I also drink prune juice, mainly because I love the taste but also I think this can also help. I do try to drink plenty of water and juice, and I do eat fruit. I still do get constipated if I've had to take more cocodamol as it's difficult to get the right balance. I'd sooner have the runs than be constipated, the pain is terrible.

aside from drinking plenty of water, as most of us are a bit dehydrated, flax seeds, magnesium citrate(or malate or glycinate) a good probiotic every day keeps me regular. Also since I managed to heal my IBS, using diet and L-glutamine mainly, I don’t have as much of a problem.

If all this yummy fibre (mm, figs!) Doesn't get you moving, consider if you need less fibre not more. There are a few odd balls who can become seriously blocked by too much fibre.😭

For those dear folks, nature has an answer. Magnesium citrate. Take your dose in the evening so it can do its work without causing worries. 🤨😉

I used the powder which isn't easy to gauge given the array of different teaspoons in my drawer🙄. Started with quarter teaspoon, decided nothing was happening ,so repeated more generously; oh dear! I would suggest not getting carried away?🐎

Here comes tmi. It wasn't like movicol that painfully liquefied some of my innerds for a week and made me fearful to leave the house, whilst not actually fixing the blockage, but boy did the magnesium suddenly get things moving!very fast!!

It was pretty urgent 🤭😯🤒for nearly two hours. Hence take it evening time? After that it was bedtime and I slept great. It's a good relaxer. And, Finally my innerds were properly cleaned out.

If you decide to try, I'd suggest maybe taking a standard dose and see how it goes? If it doesn't help, up your evening dose carefully taking a tablet and a bit? Over do things at your peril😱 oh and take it with plenty of water? Possibly you could be sensible and Google first? They should help decide what dosage to try. Bearing in mind each of us are different how we respond.

Magnesium is also great for migraine, neck and shoulder aches and more and lots of us are likely deficient. There are many sorts but it's the magnesium citrate that helps you 'go'.
