Hi, why does fybromialgia make our muscles cramp? Does anyone know? Also, What do you do to manage this problem? When it flares up I have cramps that last for days, my husband tries to help me stretching sometimes for how hard the muscles become. Thank you

Hello,

Sorry I don't know why muscle cramps happen.

For me, heat helps so taking a bath is good. I also have a TENS machine and it seems to make a difference when it's really bad. But if you consider getting one, you could ask a dr because the NHS let's you try them. Some people hate them so would save you money if that's the case for you. If I'm too sedentary it makes it worse as well so going for a walk or doing a little stretching can help a little as long as it's not too much.

I expect it happens for similar reasons to why people without fibro get cramps.

I find keeping active and on the move regularly helps, gentle stretches, I drink tonic water, as the quinine can help. Heat can help too

Hi Lussan

Lots of stretching throughout the day, even just a few at a time can be enough. My leg muscles in particular go brick hard so I'm constantly stretching them.

There's loads of simple exercises available online that are quite easy to slot into to your day. You don't need to visit a gym or put your workout clothes on though you can if you want to 😁

Magnesium spray works well for me & Epsom salts in your bath if you can have one is really good too.

Hi Lussan,

Drinking more water helps me. I can't explain why.

I hope you find relief.

It usually means you are low on Magnesium which fibromites should be taking. You can also put magnesium spray on your legs, which helps. If you take magnesium tabs at night it helps with your sleep. I was advised to take MAGNESIUM MALATE, as they are many forms.

Hello Lussan,

I also don't know why we get cramps.

Several years ago my GP prescribed Quinine Sulfate 200mg and I take 1 when have a prolonged attack of the cramps and 9 times out 10 they work well.

I do get cramp in my feet and/or ankles when in bed sleeping. The only way I've found to stop it is somewhat unconventional, I stand barefoot for 10 - 20 mins on my icy cold kitchen floor which is plain painted concrete until the cramp recedes. Then I can get back to bed and resume my sleep. This hasn't been recommended to me, I just felt an urge to try it and it worked. I'd also advise to keep your fluids up.

I hope this helps you and that you get some relief soon.

My doctor recommended Tonic water or Bitter lemon to drink to help with cramp, and it works (actually she recommended a big Gin and Tonic!) Ten years later I'm still doing it, but without the gin!

Cheers, Midori
