Hi PollypoCBT is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.

Its just when a medical professional talks to you and helps by asking many questions.

Through doing this they help you come to terms with having longterm chronic pain.

They teach you to look at it in a different way, which helps you in the day to day living.

They also can give you exercises and teach you mindfulness and breathing exercises.

You just need to have an open mind and believe in what they teach you. It really is good for your peace of mind.

Hope you get on ok with it.

Keep as well as you can be 😊😊

Hi I had cbt a couple of years ago, it wasn't for me, in fact I felt worse after every session, but I do believe it could've been the therapist I had, I felt like I was talking to a brick wall, and some of the stuff she said to me was unbelievable... But, it's worth a try to see if its for you. There's a cbt book called "feeling good", can't remember who it's by, worth a read if face to face cbt doesn't work for you. Good luck x

Hi there and welcome to the group :) Basicly CBT is a talking therapy. I had it for a year on a one to one basis and found it very helpful. It's not everyone's cup of tea and it does depend a lot on the person your dealing with. I would say give it a go. What do you have to lose 😊

As well as everyone else's comments I would like to add that there are different forms of CBT not least in some of the objectives they have as it is used for PTSD to stopping smoking.

Also the therapist can be very influential in the outcomes and there are also different ways it is applied i.e. group, one to one and in person or telemedicine. And as we are all different then we can be better suited to one maybe than the other.

Also the person seeking CBT needs to be at the right place in your journey for it to be appropriate. If you go into it saying it will not work for me then it will most likely be a self fulfilling prophecy. For some it does help them.

No I haven't though I've often wondered x

All I can say is go in with an open mind, take the bits you find helpful and forget the rest. I found some information helpful but the taking of ones problems and imagining putting them on a leaf and watching the leaf float down the stream was a stretch too far for me :) However one member of the group thought it was a great help. Just remember attend with PMA (positive mental attitude) to get the best from it. Do hope you find CBT helpful.

I've used it 5-6 times, esp. for anxiety, but also to check if I'd got my old wounds/traumata under control, which I have, and for relationship issues/co-dependency. Once over a year, sometimes only a few months or when I needed it. It's a bit tricky to decide if the challenges a therapist gives you are OK or not right. I wouldn't stop at trying it once. And I'd try self-help books. It hasn't helped me with fibro, tried 3 psychologists, one for 4x, one 1x just to double check, and 1x in the rheum. clinic, plus 2 pain books, eby Jon Kabat-Zinn and Peter Levine. Probly because I already have good pain management and they were mainly telling me I'm doing OK. I've had pretty severe pain all my life and it doesn't stop me from being happy any more, because solving other issues are more important. To me, health is *not the most important thing in life, never has been. Otherwise I'd've lost from the start :-D
