I started knitting 3 years ago and i have found it an excellent distraction for my pain. I also find it helps my mental health. YouTube is excellent for self teaching, under the fluctuating current climate! However, when it’s ok to really be around people again, joining a knit/craft group is also a great way to make friends. And, you are likely to meet a fellow FM sufferer, like i did.
I have just completed these fingerless mitts for one of my sisters. 🥰🧶

Wow-zer Neon they are great! You should sell them i would buy a pair
You are very sweet. As I discovered, knitting is actually an expensive hobby. To commission knit wear, is incredibly expensive. The yarn a lot of us use, is usually less synthetic, and hand dyed. Also, the hours it takes... add it all up, give an estimate, and the people who query a commission run away! 😁
I occasionally gift items but i mostly do it for myself. 🥰
Good job. I tend to crochet now, as find it less painful than knitting (and quicker)
But I was reading something that repetitive activities such as knitting, crochet etc naturally increase the serotonin levels in your brain. Since people with fibro might be low on serotonin - then we have all the excuse we need to sit and craft xxx
Absolutely. I feel calm (unless i’m screwing it up! 😁) and relaxed and it just takes my mind off things. It makes me zen.
I used to Read a lot but when i’m not in a good head space i can read a few pages and bot have a clue what i’ve just read or i’ll reread the same Paragraph numerous times!
Oh I'm same with reading now ...I tend to listen to audio books now - but even then I completely lose track of what I'm listening to and miss half the story
I don't hand knit as I find it too painful but I weave, machine knit, naalbind, lucet and am trying to teach myself crochet (mixed success). I process wool from fleece to product which, after the initial investment in a spinning wheel is practically free. Farmers are throwing fleeces away because they are being offered less than it costs to process them. I currently pay £7 for a fleece but that is for rare breeds and my last alpaca fleece was a tenner.
Drive around sheepy areas after shearing and you'll see fleeces hung over gates with "Free!" signs. I'll knock and offer to pay a fair price because the farmer had to pay the shearer.
Of course, after saying all that, I'm currently knocking out bobble hats for Xmas presents using ALDI acrylic Aran yarn.
Edited to add : Forgot to say I love the gloves and the colours are gorgeous.
My friend spins yarn. Her goal is to do the whole process from fleece to garment. I haven’t for any interest in that i’m afraid! Just let me buy the yarn, in whatever colour i like and whichever blend and knit! 😁
There’s big business to be made in spinning and dying yarn!
It’s lovely to to know there are other crafters on here. It really does help the fight against pain and is so good for the soul.
Well done to you! Such intricate knitting and so beautiful. I would get frustrated when it inevitably went wrong and the stress would give me a flare up!!
Welcome to the knitters its a lovely hobby to have and as you say helps to keep your mind of things, I go to a knitting group and it gets you out. Your gloves are beautiful love the colours, your sister is going to be very impressed with them, keep knitting Love & Hugs Xx
Love the mitts, I know how relaxing knitting can be, having learned to knit at around 8 years old, and carried on until about 25 years ago, when I was about 40. I loved creating jumpers and cardigans for children in the family and for myself and my husband, the more complicated the pattern the better. However, I had to give it up due to arthritis in my hands and fingers, I could no longer stand the pain when knitting or crocheting (which I also used to do).
Well done on teaching yourself and I hope you find lots of pleasure from knitting for many years to come. x
I had a knitting machine when I was about 18, and used it a lot over the next few years, can't remember what happened to it! However, I don't think it's as relaxing, nor is it so rewarding, as ordinary knitting, you don't get the same sense of achievement. But you can make a garment in no time at all using one! x
They are amazing! I’ve just picked up knitting and find it can help distract from pain but if I do it for too long the pain gets worse and I forget which stitch I’m on 😂
Well i did have some crazy named tendinitis for about 8 months last year. It did slow me down but then it just went! That’s what my pain sometimes does! 🤷🏻♀️
