Amitriptyline and Atrial Fibrillation

Hi everyone. This is my first post on this forum. Today I saw a consultant rheumatologist, and it is highly probable that I have fibromyalgia.

I have been prescribed 10mg amitriptyline at night. I also have atrial fibrillation, although I have been in normal sinus rhythm for over a year.Although I have been assured the amitriptyline is compatible with my other meds, the patients info re “heart problems such as disturbances of heart rhythm” is a bit worrying!

Is there any one here with AF and taking amitriptyline? I’m sure there must be! I just need some reassurance.

best to speak to your pharmacy or ask in an HU forum that discusses heart issues a you will have a better chance of an answer

glad that you have but suspect a pharmacist may be the best person to ask.

Hi. Yes she did know and I asked if all my meds were compatible with amitriptyline. It was only when I got my tablets, diligently read the patient info which says not to take it if you have heart rhythm problems. I have spoken to the pharmacist this afternoon who says it’s fine at such a low dose. I’m also waiting to hear back from my Gp. Although I have afib I’ve been in normal sinus rhythm for 15 months so hoping it doesn’t tip me back. I know I’ll be crossing my fingers when I take it! Thanks for your input mydexter. Keep well. Val

Hello, saw your post and it looks like your have been given great advice. Drs are surposed to know what medication you can and can’t take if you have multiple illnesses but pharmacists are wonderful help. It is fine to read instructions, especially if you have heart issues. AF is very scary when it goes out of rhythm, so take care

Thanks Millie. Update- I have yet to get a reply from my GP, but spoke to the pharmacist who said it was fine to go ahead with that low dose. I’ve taken it for two nights now and have got improved sleep both nights. More importantly my heart is still beating in steady 4:4 time! Phew!

Thanks to everyone for their input. Much appreciated.
