Hi Toe-62

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today? I personally have a ''memory foam mattress'' and I find it wonderful. I also have an electric adjustable bed so I can alternate my position depending on where my pain is that night.

I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck, and please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

Ken are those beds expensive very expensive and is there anything on these beds to lift duvet of knees and feet xx

TheAuthor profile image
TheAuthor in reply toMatrix

Mine was a cheap one off amazon, it only cost about £350. They go up to about £1,500 for the single. Since they lift at the top and bottom (whichever you want at the time) it is not possible to have it lifting the duvet off the feet or leg areas! x :)

Thanks Ken you got a bargain there , I know they are usually over a grand . Shame they wouldn't work for me well it would but not for one of the areas ,be great for when I'm struggling to breath. In a lot of pain today so I'm on sofa with a hot water bottle on my back . All I did was clean the house and David does the floors and hoovering . Ah well it's all clean . Hope you and Julie are coping and have a lovely weekend. We off to spend Saturday with our grand babies and I'm so hoping this back will be ok to go take care Ken x

That can be the trouble with certain medications as you can feel really awful the next day! We both had a quiet weekend as both of us are a little tired and under the weather. I have the doctor visiting tomorrow so hopefully they can help me.

I just bought a hybrid mattress (memory foam plus coils for some extra support) with an adjustable base which allows me to skip the pillow when my neck is hurting or raise my legs when they need extra support. It has a massage feature, but that tends to overstimulate my poor already overwhelmed nerves.

Toe-62 profile image
Toe-62 in reply tologlegmomma

Hi loglemomma thanks for your advise,I will certainly look into the hybrid mattress, everything is so expensive isn't it,I could buy a car for the price I've been quoted recently, but I've been thinking about it,an decided it's worth forking out if it helps me get a better sleep with less pain.thanks again much appreciated 😀

loglegmomma profile image
loglegmomma in reply toToe-62

I have joked (even though it's not funny) that my bed cost more than my first car. My niece just bought a used car for the same price.

But.... our health is worth investing in, so sometimes we have to do whatever it takes to feel better!

Toe-62 profile image
Toe-62 in reply tologlegmomma

Yes I agree loglemomma,am jus goin for it watever the price, because at the moment I'll feel like I've been hit by a car when I step out of bed.an after all think it's Guna be last bed I buy.😀

Hi

I would go to a supplier where you are able to disuse your needs and try the mattress. Two years ago I purchased a new bed determined I was going for memory foam but once discussed with sales person and trying them decided was not for me.

Some supplies offer a exchange after so many weeks if mattress does not suite you

More coils in the springs generally are better but also can make bed higher as makes matters thicker and if going down this route need deeper pocket sheets to fit mattress.

Take your time and don't be rushed

Hi rose nice to meet you ( well not really meet you but you know what I mean) thanks for the tip funny enough I've just been reading about a company who give you a 60 day trail which is cool.think it's important to get the right one especially bloody price of some of them Christ there Guna have to start giving mortgages for beds soon haha.out of interest rose what did you settle for and was it right decision 😀

Hi

Nice to met you too

I have a small layer of a sort of memory foam on top which makes it very soft and deep sprung matters Rest Assured it works for me .

I don't have Fibromyalgia but have Polymyalgia but the pain stiffness and fatigue is very similar .

My only problem was a deep mattress makes the bed very high which is difficult to get used to in the beginning .

Best Wishes

I hate shopping and avoid it whenever necessary but when it comes to beds - it's a different matter. A couple of years ago, when we moved house, we visited as many bed places as we could.

Deciding we wanted a solid wooden frame, it was just mattress buying and we tried loads. We ended up choosing a sprung mattress with maxicool memory foam top which was available from John Lewis but we bought it online far cheaper (I've still never done the price match)! I love it but it probably doesn't fit the bill for you.

We did buy foam mattresses for another bedroom which we use for the triplet grandchildren, thinking that there was no point going for expensive and we could buy better ones when they were older. We have a double and small single which have been fantastic. When we have adult guests, they comment on how comfy the bed is and I've tried it out too and can't believe it. You really have to try everything!

I look back to my experience in intensive care at Christmas when they put me in a 'anti bedsore' bed which moved about intermittently causing me incredible back pain.

Good luck. ToD xx

Hi ToD thanks for your advise I agree it's important to try them out and choose the right one, after all we spend a lot time in them,I want something that can if possible alievate my pain and keep me cool,I'm actually going to John Lewis this afternoon so will check things out.thanks for taking time to reply much appreciated.x

Hi I am also looking into a new matress, yes they are expensive. I am considering a sprung one with a gel top, as being hot contributes to being itchy and my pain levels. I found memory foam too hot for me.

Joyia profile image

Oh the dilemma, I am also looking for a new mattress for my double bed. As I have many allergies I am reluctant to purchase memory foam as it is made with toxic chemicals as are many mattresses, even latex is not always pure. Organic mattresses are very expensive and outside of my finances and so the saga goes on, if anyone has an answer I would be grateful to hear about their experiences too.

Joyia,,, I think your so wise avoiding memory foam because of it's toxicity,,, it off gases for years and the effects have never been evaluated,, this is something either not known about by many or ignored. I do however value the health I have left at present.

May I suggest you read my message to Tony,,, it is about three or four posts up from the end. Hope this helps.

Hi Toe-62 ,

I see you've had a lot of great advice on here but thought I'd add something which I found was absolutely crucial for me. I came across a website tha gave advice on choosing a mattress depending the type of sleeper you are. I am a side sleeper which means my spine takes a lot of my weight whilst sleeping. I am a couple of stone over my ideal weight and also osteo in the lower back. After a lot of research and allowing for my budget, I selected an ortho sprung pocket spring mattress. Ive had it for about three months now and I must say I sleep better and my back pain isn't as angry in the mornings.

So in my case I found that my sleep postion played a large part in the type of mattress I needed to reduce ache and pains and aid sleep.

Good luck with your choice - hope it brings you many nights of good quality sleep.

I turned 53 this year - I was always active - sporty, dancing, a buzy buzy bee - never previously felt my 'age'.... Now I feel as old and stiff as ancient egyptian mummy 😕.

The company I went to for my 'Princess and the Pea' mattress also took weight into account. If someone who is over a certain weight sleeps on a mattress without enough support they may sink to the bottom, a light person would find a mattress with too much support hard and uncomfortable.

I bought a good quality sprung orthopaedic mattress, but found it too firm when the Fibro started. I have got a good mattress topper though, filled with duvet-type filling ( light weight ). This definitely eases some of the pain and makes it easier to get comfortable.

Hi Marliz yes I tried my sisters orthopaedic whilst she was away and I agree it was awful.cheers for your thoughts

I have a pocket sprung mattress on a sprung divan base with a separate memory foam mattress topper. I put a cotton mattress cover on top of that and then cotton sheets so it keeps me cool. My bed is extremely comfortable.

If you are going to get an orthopaedic type mattress or using a specialist mobility firm then be sure to ask for the VAT to come off which will make it considerably cheaper. A lot of firms do not tell you this unless you enquire.

This is all above board and legal, go to the GOV.UK website and type in Vat Relief where you will find more information. The site is also useful for claiming VAT off of a lot of equipment and services, even simple things like a medical pill box, or bigger items like a mobility scooter. You only need to sign a declaration when you buy it, to say it is for your own use and need it to help your condition. You do not have to be registered disabled or anything like that and you don't need to send away for a form. Couldn't be easier!

Happy choosing!

Toe-62 If you would like to leave yourself better informed about beds have a look at the johnryan website, you will get all the information you want there. Most sprung beds do not have enough quality fillings and they quickly deteriorate. Memory foam has many different qualities from the excellent (very dense) to the poor ( less dense) it goes by weight basically but the foam dose degrade and the less dense the quicker it goes bang or softens. If money is a big consideration and you don't mind having a used bed (people sleep on used beds all the time in hotels and think nothing of it) go onto a large auction website and search vi spring their better beds last a lifetime and you should be able to pick something up for a few hundred that will last your lifetime. I would go with an older better model as and apposed to a newer cheaper model. The vi-spring beds do not have a perimeter spring and this leaves the mattress much more flexible allowing you you to sink in a bit more than on the usual sprung mattresses which have the perimeter spring. I would say if your between 8 and 12 stone go for the soft. Medium up to about 17 stone and firm over that as a rough guide. I have the sublime superb model and it is medium,, it is beautiful but I sometimes think I should have got the soft,,, I'm eleven stone. I could not go back to a mattress with a perimeter spring. My ribs we're so sore trying to lie down, I dreaded getting into bed and my last bed was a mid range Relyon I paid about £3000 for a few years back. The one thing if you buy one second hand is to make sure that the edge is in good condition,,, it is a stitched edge and the mattress cannot be folded or you will break the edge. They are also a ton weight. If you are able google "AndsotoBed" find your local shop and trundle down,,,,, lie on them for an hour or so,,,, they will be delighted to let you do so and know how to treat potential customers in there. I also say start well up there,, a Shetland Superb,,, Sublime Superb,,,, or Tiara models,,,, dress up and don't flinch at the price tag,,,, Then you will know first hand what I am talking about,,,,if you fall in love or al least asleep,,,, you can get the bus back home and start biding online.

Johnryan do nice beds but and they do have the fillings,,,, unfortunately they also have the perimeter spring,,,, this is to make sure people do not fold them break the edge and then want to return it,,,, nothing else,,,,,, and the cost for the customer is the mattress surface looses the lovely flexible surface that allows you to sink in and be well supported at the same time.

Thats,,, my tuppence worth.

Joyia profile image
Joyia in reply toRayB

Interesting Ray, Vi Spring do have a great reputation but as you noted are very expensive to buy new. There is one consideration though, I have noticed some of the better quality mattresses are heavy and when you live on your own would be unturnable, something I also have to consider. You gave a good explanation though which is appreciated.

RayB profile image
RayB in reply toJoyia

Joyia,, my bed is the super king size sublime superb it is up near the top of the range and it has two layers of springs it really dose weigh a ton and it was a nightmare turning it. SO,,,,,, I had a block and tackle installed above the bed just for turning the mattress. I keep joking with a friend that I he may have to use the block and tackle to get me out of bed if this fibro gets any worse. Just a point of NO Turn mattresses,,, this is a very clever tactic by mattress makers to make people think they are getting something special when in actual fact they are getting something less and charged more for the privilege. They only pad one side of the mattress,,,, honestly. So the mattress has half the lifespan of one with two sides. Cleaver but deceitful!

Ray

Joyia profile image
Joyia in reply toRayB

Good grief Ray a block and tackle, nobody else will have a bedroom like it!

RayB profile image
RayB in reply toJoyia

Probably not Joyia but I love my luxurious furnishings,,,, I can just about manage the mattress at present but I thought it prudent to install the block and tackle include as a insurance for the future. It is only a very discrete white punchbag hook put into the joist above the bed and the lifting gear is of cord not chain,, I can just set it on and lift it off as required.

Get as good a mattress as you can afford and then get a good quality memory foam . They are so much better than the memory foam mattresses . Expect to pay over a hundred for a good one, I take mine off when cleaning and it does it good , I wouldn't be without it .

ksmiles2015 profile image

Over the years I have tried every type of mattress bed I could afford. Memory foam mattress was no good as spending a lot of time in bed eventually the foam didn't return to shape. At the minute I have a decent mattress but bought the best memory foam topper I could get & it's ok.

My best bed was a water bed heaven even at times I couldn't sleep no pain where shoulders knees & hips touched the mattress. It was called a soft sided bed, the bed looked like a normal divan, the mattress was about 8" all around a normal mattress so enough to sit on & have stability to get in bed, then onto very gently moving centre section, the best ever, sadly when I divorced my ex husband, he took the bed as he had paid for it, even though we got it to help me. It wasn't cheap, king sized now are about £1000, but I've probably spent that in 10 years of buying beds or mattresses & the difference was definitely like the Princess & the pea after the pea had been removed lol. Maybe 1 day I'll be able to have another water bed & have the painful spots on my body to get some relief for a while 😊 Good luck with your bed search hope you find the best fit for you

Toe-62 profile image
Toe-62 in reply toksmiles2015

To be honest ksmiles I haven't give a water bed any thought at all,now you've brought it up,you got me thinking.dont know why a water bed never appealed to me for some reason, maybe because am not to good traveling on water,an that only on the ferry across the Mersey Haha.i remember a lad who lived in my street years ago he had one but it burst.maybe that's why I'm not keen.am not sure, but I'll definitely do some homework on that I imagine it would be good for our condition, thanks for the tip 😄

ksmiles2015 profile image

Hi

I think everyone thinks of water beds like those out of Step Toe & son when it burst & flooded the place I probably did before an old consultant suggested it.

There is very little actual water in it, the part where water goes has about 3 layers of can't think of word Fibro fog so Is well protected from the outside. Layers of thin foam

Are in the water part so not like getting on top of a swimming pool with the cover still on lol.

When they delivered & set ours up going back a fair few years they asked our weight n if we wanted much movement in water, in new ones I've looked at you can have 95% non movement if that makes sense but I found sometimes just a gentle movement was relaxing & helped me sleep. Think I read you have bed all to yourself heaven isn't it lol, but when my ex used to get in the bed barely moved. I hate water too took ferry over the Paris & was a wreck so I can imagine your reservations. There are many places that do water beds even if you decide against them if there was a store close by that you could lie on one it would be an experience at least lol. Like you I am a side sleeper & the difference it made to my knees shoulders & hip pain was amazing.

Thinking of the step toe & son series now I may have to find on tv & watch it lol.

Have fun trying out beds 😊

Haha step toe an son brilliant "HAROLD" lol classic.that am only fools an horses I love them.infact sometimes I laugh so much,I don't feel pain.anyway back to water beds I was always under the impression you'd be swaying back an forth.but I've just been reading some reviews on them, and they sound real cool, and even better I have a warehouse less than a mile from my place, aqua star sleep systems, this just gets better,I shall try them out very soon.(sorry admin not sure if I was meant to mention company name if not sorry in advance) anyway Karen I will let you know when I've tried one out thanks ohh am all excited now, blimey how my life has changed being so excited about a water bed lol cheers Karen X p.s not nice ex hubby takin your bed,not nice 😄

ksmiles2015 profile image
ksmiles2015

Even if you decide they not for you at least you can say I've been on a waterbed today it's amazing the results you will get cos for some reason people hear water beds & think eye eye kinky lol. It's great that there is a warehouse so close to you, where we got ours from was about. Mile away too & thought they had closed down, but found out they have just moved to another industrial estate. Hopefully they will be really knowledgeable as I didn't know anything about them but the assistant was brilliant, I must have stayed in bed half an hour cos a couple of minutes is no good for us to know how our body will react.

So trying to think of what was called it is a soft sided water bed, that's the one that's based on a normal type bed, the hard sided is more like Harold's bed, love both them programmes and yeah sometimes having a laugh can distract you from the pain for even a short while is better than nothing.

I'll be really interested in how you get on even if you decide it's not for you I recommended to electrician my landlord uses as he has a bad back, he laughed & said oh kinky but bought 1 & said it's the best bed he ever had.

1 thing I realised about mattresses very wary on is don't have the ones with fabric covered buttons & padded service they are agony on you tender points.

Glad I may have been some help take care & hope this reply doesn't wake you I only just noticed the time

Karen yes I will most definitely let you know how it goes,I can't wait to try one out,I start a pain programme today which is 9-5 everyday,so hopefully I'll be going to check them out on Saturday.but you really have me thinking,it's nice to hear from someone who has experienced this type of bed, wether it was for your kinky tendicies,or purely therapeutic 😜 I have been reading about them on the internet most of the night an all the reviews are all positive.an don't worry about late posts seem to do most my sleeping early evening. Thanks Tony X

ksmiles2015 profile image
ksmiles2015

Hope your pain programme helps you, hope you manage to get there every day as before they have offered me this but as we never know when the invisible bus will hit us in the night, it's hard to commit to a week of attendances.

Like you I'm usual up most nights, except when I'm gone a few days with little sleep & I zonk out in an afternoon & don't wake up till following morning lol.

Sadly I never got to experience any kinky value from waterbed, but if I ever can afford to get 1 again I'll deffo put it on my bucket list lol 😉.

Glad you have seen so many positive comments about water beds, as I said I've tried every combination of mattress, mattres & topper & nothing comes close to the feeling of being on a waterbed when your joints are in pain but not feeling any pressure pain on them. Thought of another plus too, no bed bugs lol as there is only, think it was lambs wool zipped cover over the water bed workings, so you cud unzip & wash as necessary & wipe the pvc/ rubber outer part of water bit. I think it was every 6 months we had to buy bottle of liquid that just poured into the filling hole to prevent bugs in the water but that was it, company came out to fill adjust & even came to store the water part of it when we moved house. Pity I didn't get it in divorce but I got me back, so that was worth 10 beds lol.

Hope you had a good day and learnt something new you can share with us about managing pain, I'm rubbish at pacing so just carry on through pain then suffer after lol
