Electronic prescription update.

Hi folks, I replied a while back about the problems people have encountered getting controlled drug prescription electronically. I.E. you can't get them!

Good news! It seems the legislation to enable electronic transmission of CD's will be passed in July all being well.

Once the software providers update the GP's and the pharmacies systems (may take several months?) then hopefully the problems of split prescriptions will be no more. Good news for all!

cheers,

Mark A (Pharmacy owner)

I've never had a problem ordering mine on line. Must be different for other surgeries.

Hi, it's not the ordering that's the problem. The difficulty is in the way the pharmacy are able to get the prescriptions. Normal prescriptions are able to be sent electronically, CD's are only issued on paper still. You may not notice this when you collect your meds assuming the pharmacy has received both and has matched them up.

Dan, there's always a way to screw the system. Stolen prescription pads have always been a risk.

If you came to our pharmacy as a new patient for those sort of meds we'd need ID from you, not all pharmacies operate the same security processes for CD collection.

You're right tho, EPS isn't for everyone especially if you need to use different pharmacies as you do.

"Hand written prescriptions are so rare these days that if they had a controlled drug on it most pharmacists would ring the prescriber, especially if an unusual amount. "......I agree.

Aye, you just can't send them back to the wholesaler!

However if that is Tesco's Standard Operating Procedure..........

We don't / can't keep everything in stock, we'd end up destroying meds for being out of date.

We simply can not afford to hold high levels of ANY meds, our labeling system is set to order as we label and maintain a set level of most drugs (doesn't always work I have to admit :-( ) We try to keep just enough to cover our regular prescriptions.

As a small community pharmacy our regular patients are just that..............pretty regular! Anyone requesting something unusual, or a large quantity may be disappointed.

And don't forget the national shortages of some meds, Zomorph 30's are currently unavailable again!

With regards to asking for ID, our SOP states we ask for ID if we don't know the person collecting the meds. This is recorded simply as a "YES" in the CD register's appropriate column to confirm we have seen ID.

That's great news. It's a circus getting mine. My pharmacy says they posted the request. The surgery says they never received any. The pharmacy then says that maybe it's in the post. Or am I sure I ordered them! And on and on. A number of times! All I do is mediate between them! Thanks for the info. Take care.

Don't get me started on that one! I could rant and rave for hours about that subject. But that's for another forum I think ;-)
