Migraines

Does anyone else that has fibro also suffer with migraines? I have chronic migraines. I am now on propranolol for hopefully lessening the migraines and maybe someday having them far and few in between. I also am in metopause. I really think that hormones have something to do with migraines. But I am not an expert. Any help from anyone?

good morning Krazy girl. Im not too sure but since i've been diagnosed with fibro I've also started with migraines. I've started last saturday and it lasted for 5 days. Made me nauses and I felt sick and only the third day it started to subside. I also take it one day at a time. Also my hormones are imbalanced so don't feel alone. We all on the same ship Dear. Keep well and take care. xxx

I'm now 57 and had my first migraine when I was 13. I've been on propranolol on and off and it has worked for me. That is until about 7 years ago when I also started with facial pain, this was horrendous as no painkillers worked. No one really made a diagnosis, the London Migraine Clinic thought maybe it was an atypical migraine, the first neurologist just shrugged his shoulders, the second said maybe trigeminal neuralgia! Gabapentin was a miracle drug, until it stopped working after 3 months. I ended up on propranolol, nortriptyline and topiramate. These eventually eased the pain but my brain was frazzled.

I had Botox and it was wonderful, I was able to stop the topiramate and my brain is functioning again! I had three lots of Botox but NICE say you can't have it unless you are having 15 headache days a month. I'm getting about 10 now so can't have it again yet, crazy!

I was always told my migraine might worsen during the menopause!

Whenever I searched the Internet re facial pain fibromyalgia always came up. My GP eventually made the diagnosis.

I'm still on propranolol but have noticed my GFR blood test is abnormal and this is a side effect of propranolol. My GP is not worried unless the test goes lower! The GFR is a kidney function test so I am a bit worried!

I hope the propranolol works for you. I wouldn't wish my pain on anyone!

Hi I have Hemaplegic Migraines, I also have Fibro and several other autoimmune problems. I am not sure whether Fibro is the cause of them or just another of my problems, I have Hughes Syndrome and I know that they are part of the Hughes package so it may be worthwhile checking out other reasons. Good luck and good health

Hi Carol, I also get the hemaplegic migraines and basilar migraines.

They are no fun. They are really scary. Most times its just migraines with dizziness, light, sound and smell sensitivity. I also get nausea. I have wound up in the er many times. I have a friend who hides in her closet when she has one.

I too am a chronic migraine sufferer and was on propanol for some time but it made me have problems staying upright as I have very low blood pressure, and it just exacerbated that problem. I'm now taking Rizatripan and that certainly lessens the horrendous pain, but I still feel wiped out for days. I was on Imigran injections but I could never do it right as my head was by that point was so fuddled and then I found that if I did get it right then I felt like I was being strangled as it constricted my throat......hence the change to Rizatripan.

I know that mine are definitely not hormone related, but I know of many people who once they've been through the menopause have wonderfully found themselves migraine free, so I'm sure that in some cases they are hormone related. Just for interest too, I know a chap who had migraines badly from the age of 5 until he hit puberty and his migraines stopped.

Sending lots of positive healing vibes to you 😀

Hi all,

I had migraines from the age of around 12 to 13, just before puberty. They eased off during my 30's 40's, but came back with a vengeance during the menopause. I was prescribed a tablet called pizotifen, as a preventative. I take one of these ( the lowest dose) before sleep each night. Occasionally I have needed to take two, but they definitely keep my migraines at bay. If I do have a migraine it never lasts as long, and is much less painful. I have never had it suggested that they link to fibromyalgia or thyroid or low B12, all of which I suffer from. Best wishes MariLiz

I've found my B12 is low.

Have you been offered/found any effective way to increaseB12 ?

MariLiz profile image
MariLiz in reply toMicro

Hi Micro, I get injections for low B12, but after the first two weeks of loading doses I am on three monthly jabs. I don't find these are enough, so I supplement with a sublingual spray during the last four weeks. This tides me over until I get my next injection. I understand there are nasal sprays and sublingual lozenges too. Good luck with raising your levels. MariLiz

Micro, if your b12 is low you can take the b12 supplement or there's an injection.

Yes when going through menopause you do have some headaches but most of the time Tylenol will help, but when you add other health issues and taking medication for them will also cause sever headaches.

With my migraines I loose eye sight in one yet or both mine sometimes last for days. They are calling mine a neurological disorder and that is why I loose my eye sight they say. I can see really good with my eyes just when the symptoms hit and there is no warnings for my blindness with headache or no headache my eyes will not open up n if they do the vision is so blurry n I can't tell distance so I run into things. But my doctors think it is best to keep me working even though this disorder is considered a legal blindness n I have to drive 35 miles to work one way so I miss a lot of work. A lot of times u feel like a freak but we are not. They say for this eye conditions they can give u botox shots to help but it will not fix it just slow it down some or could make it worse.

I am too going through menopause at 51 still getting periods. Headaches are worse when hormones are changing, gyno put me on birth control for cramps and hormonal headaches that would last me 4-5 days. It did help eliminate both but unfortunately at my age I can no longer be on the bc pills as they only like you to be on them for 2-3 yrs around menopause age. So I am off them still getting my friend and cramps . I did research and googled headaches and came across a study for B2 . And so far it has helped me. Try googling the study and ask your dr before trying any supplements. Hope this works for you as it did me. Good luck.

Hi . Yes I also have fybromyalgia and migraines . Migraines where first but I got them under control avoiding certain foods and eating every 2 hours . But since the fybro diagnoses they have become worse and I am more sensitive to smells, chemicals and especially bright lights. I don't like the tablets I get prescribed so now I and just taking amytriptalin. Preferring to really self medicate using clean eating and no processed food . Also I take 100m of evening primrose every day which helps with the hormones and magnesium every day which seems to have lessens the frequency of migraines . Hope this helps 😊I do find that all the other tablets that get prescribed just cause other problems.

Hi all,

I got my first migraine 20years ago and if I am stressed, not eating properly, and bright lights shining in my eyes I can end up with a migraine, maybe get one or two a year. Have only been diagnosed with fibro for the last 2 years and can not believe how many I get now, during Easter hols I had 5 migraines. I used to been able to take some over the counter tablets and it was not too bad, sleep helps but now I look at all the medication I take for the pain and end up having to go to bed with a wet flannel on my head and earplugs and can often be like this for a few days at a time. For me I do think migraine and fibro are linked. Still looking for something else to have in reserve in case but Dr does not want to give me anymore medication.

Anyone with an alternative treatment to medication please let me know.

Take care, Redbob

Hi krazy-girl

I am so sorry to read that you are suffering from migraines and I genuinely hope that you can find the answers that you are looking for. I also suffer with migraines and see a Neurologist and have been prescribed Pregabalin as a Neural Suppressant. I also have a drug prescribed called Sumatriptan which shrink the blood vessels going into the head and I find this extremely successful.

I want to genuinely wish you all the best of luck.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

Hello Krazy-girl. I have Fibro and have undiagnosed headaches. My boyfriend who also has Fibro has had migraines since he was a child. I have too little hormones. I have stopped HRT to see if these severe headaches go. No sign of them going yet. HRT can cause Migraines. I can tell you this that stress is what both of us suffer from and it can trigger Migraines.

Hi there. I suffered severe cluster migraines, but since I was diagnosed with the lovely Fibromyalgia, my migraines have gone! What I want to know is would the medication of which there is quite a few, counter act the migraines? Bizarre. Freya.

Hi, its a terrible thing migraine, has everything to do with hormones: estrogen en therefore serotonin. During pregnancy and after menopause its often less or even gone

Propranolol prevents bloodvessels from narrowing I think thats why it can prevent migraines. Do you have aura?
