Hi cazlooks :)

Due to the nature of Fibromyalgia being different for us all it is difficult to place one particular pain medication as we tend to be on a combination of medications and treatments.

Amitryptyline is used for Fibromyalgia as it help us to sleep better and thus meaning reduce some of the fog and fatigue that we usually endure. I can't tell you the biological factors as I'm not a medical professional but I can give you some links for information.

This is a page discussing how fibromyalgia is treated and is from our 'about fibro' section of our Mother site fibroaction.org

fibroaction.org/Pages/How-I...

A link to one of our pinned posts and an FAQ - My current medication doesn't seem to be working, what treatments are recommended for Fibro?

Gives info from the same section of our Mothersite and it gives info regarding medications

The following link takes you to our section 'Becoming an Expert Patient' Article 4 - Medications & staying in control which contains some links that may be useful for you :)

This link takes you to the Fibromyalgia Health Center on webmd.com and it's section discussing effective medications for fibromyalgia and I thought it could be useful to you :)

Sorry for the bombardment of info but I do hope it is useful and you can answer your question.

I don't personally take Amitriptyline I take Sertraline as it doesn't leave me dozy all day :D

It is combined with Tramadol, regular and slow release, Pregabalin and others. it's a fight to manage them all at times too.

I must say that having a chat with your GP about this will help you both work out which medications may be the best for you. It can take a while to find the right combination so please don't be disheartened if the meds don't work first time.

Take care and I'm sure people will be along shortly to share their experiences with you

Soft fluffie hugs and smiles for you :)

Morning all - I'm trying to get by on "just" the Amitriptyline, 50mg every night, and codeine for really bad days, I'm worried about too much weight gain, that sounds vain but it's more to do with the arthritis in hips, feet, knees, spine etc and I've struggled enough in life to keep my weight in the "normal" range. Somedays I do wonder if I ought to add an SSRI into the mix - or whether to save that for later if necessary. xx

Hi sounds like your quite aware of the meds you take but there's so much we as patients don't know so be careful. The one thing I do know is that I Changed from gabapentin to pregabalin thinking that gabapentin was putting on the weight but it wasn't it was me just craving a little so I manage that instead and stay to reasonably controlled meals by portion sizes. I found out that pregabalin does this too but at the time I believed it was the gabapentin and came to realise it was the comforting that was causing the weight gain. Hope this was helpful. I mean its hardly surprising we have and suffer so many symptoms with our conditions we are bound to reach for something. So heres to hoping you can manage this to your personal happiness. xxx

I try to manage without any meds and take vitamin and mineral supplements plus occasional ibruprofen when the pain is too bad without it. I found the homeopathic remedy Rhus Tox worked wonders for alleviating the muscle cramps. x

My GP says Amitriptyline is the safest drug (?) I know they prescribe it to children for bedwetting. Now I've always comfort ate so can't blame the FMS fro that, sadly. LOL ,x

Hi cazlooks

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today? The only thing I can really add is that we are all individuals and therefore we all react differently to both our medications and our illness.

I want to wish you all the best of luck with finding the answers that you desire and deserve.

Hi. I put on a pound a week with amitryptiline and had brain fog all day so I've given up on that. I take paracetamol with codeine when the pain is really bad plus I take ibulive gel generally as I find It difficult to tolerate pain killers as I have IBS. The gel can work quite well . Yoga, meditation, Acqupunture etc all help
