I have lupus and this tablet is to help with sleeping

I take 50mg amit to help me sleep. If I take it too late at night, then I feel 'hungover' the next morning, but if I take it too early in the evening, then I start feeling tired before I am ready for bed and then it takes all my energy getting my jobs done before bed.

Hi susan95

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today? Usually it is a medication that you should take in the evening due to a sedative quality in the drug. This is really something to discuss with your GP as to ascertain any side-effects or reactions to amending the time of medication.

All my hopes and dreams for you

I take mine between seven and eight especially if you are working in the morning. I take 10 mg daily. Good luck with this x

I take 50mg at night & as Julie63 said if I take it too early I feel tired before I go up to

Bed or too late & I struggle waking in the morning.

I had to come off these as they clashed with another tablet I'm on but when I was on them I could only take at night as they made me incredibly sleepy, the main reason for taking them. X

Hi there

Amitriptyline should really be taken in the evening before bed- as many others have said it does have the potential to cause drowsiness -so can cause a hangover like effect if taken too late or impair your ability to function somewhat.

Having said that however it does depend on the dose you are taking and medicines do not effect everyone to the same extent- so you may get away with taking low dose amitrip (say 10-20mg) in the morning with little drowsiness. It's worth a try on a day when you don't have anything important to do and could afford to sleep all day if it does cause side effects

The point that's been missed is Amitrip is not a drug to be used like paracetamol. It's best to start slowly and come off slowly, so it's a long term thing. You really need to speak to your doctor. And you don't know till you try it what is the right does for you. There's someone on here gets the hangover on only 10mg, and someone else on 100mg with no effects

Well said that badger ...... Definitely check it out with your doctor, we can only tell you of our own experience and medical advice is really the only way to be properly advised. As you can see from the answers there is no one size fits all, so it is important that you check it out with your doctor.

I'm on 10mg which is probably the lowest dose and they make me thirsty! I take between 8.30 pm and 9.30pm. My dad has been on 80 mg and came off them because it made him too thirsty too. The best thing is to discuss a dose with your GP to see what suits you and increase or give up slowly. Good luck, hope you get it sorted soon

Have been on this for a while... I cut my 10mg tablets in half so take 5mg at 8 in the evening. If I do take the whole tablet I do notice a big difference in my ability to think straight the following day.

The evening before is the better way of looking at bedtime pills. When I first spoke to occupational Health they were worried about the "hangover". Amitrip has a warning about using machinery, please read the whole leaflet.

For most of us good practice is to take the dose at night, you may at least get a night's sleep. But its a powerful drug so please do take that medical advice which none of us can give you. :)

In direct answer to your question....NO, it is not a tablet you take when you feel you need it (e.g. Paracetamol) It has to be taken daily, to be affective (as told to me by the GP, when I asked the same question)...I have been taking this medication for a few weeks now. I was reluctant to take it, because of the sleepy side effects. I already get enough tiredness, that makes me fall asleep during the day !! BUT, I thought I'd give it a go, due to having so much tension in my muscles, which I blame for most of my pain !! As a low dose (10mg in my case) it is a very good muscle relaxant. I have found it so effective, that I haven't needed Tramadol or Gabapentin (I was coming back off of this med, with the aim of going back on to Pregabalin, but so far, I haven't re-started Pregabalin yet, due to feeling like I don't need it !!) This may be a 'honeymoon period' with Amitriptyline, and I may need other drugs again, if the effectiveness of Amitriptyline wears off ?!! But if I can manage with fewer drugs, then great. I am sick of dealing with side effects !! The sleepy hangover is quite bad in the mornings, but it does subside a lot, if you persevere with it. BUT, the hangover type sleepiness, is more manageable, than the unnatural sleepiness that I normally experience every morning anyway !! The one thing I haven't been good at, is keeping to a set time to take it. I was told to take it 12 hours before my getting up time. I keep forgetting to take it around 8pm, and have taken it as late as early hours of the morning !! Even then, on such a low dose, I don't find that I'm debilitated by it. I am just LOVING the benefit of muscle relaxation. Enjoying it while it lasts !! Good Luck, and I hope it works for you x

I agree with your answer. I was a community pharmacist and have had this for 7 years. I now just went to homeopathy. Every time I got poison ivy I felt great,so I am convinced this is an autoimmune disease. I went gluten and dairy free. I think allot of this is being caused by the food industry. I read Dr Susan Blum's book and read The Wahls diet. More and more evidence is showing this disease is similar to M.S. I am sick of all the psychological crap which has nothing to do with this . I don't know why the UK is so unfriendly, probably big business and the food industry.like here in the U.S. it is about the money. It is easier to call us a bunch of nuts ins tea d of trying to figure out a cure.

As is being said in other ways it's "horses for courses". We're all different and respond in different ways, or maybe not at all. Amitrip is basically a neurological medicine which is why it works for fibro, but not necessarily when other conditions complicate matters. There is info on the mother site explaining this and why some types of drug (opioids like codeine) don't seem to work so well on their own.

I remember when I started on it 10 mg wrecked me for weeks but now I've settled on 40mg early evening - I just about wake in a bearable state.

I use 10mg occasionally if I am having trouble sleeping or am in a flare. I used to take it daily, about an hour before bedtime. But as with most fibromyalgia drugs it caused me to gain weight and never took enough of the pain away . It is true that you really can't go on and off this but this dose is very low which allows me to do this. I have allot of drugs that I use occasionally in my "bag of tricks".I also had to go off lyrica due to weight gain. I always use the lowest dose possible. I have tried Cymbalta,Savella everything. I have gone gluten free. Google leaky gut. I am an American. So the names of the drugs may be different. None of these drugs address the problem and be prepared for them to become less effective over time. You have to be your own doctor with this illness because most doctors know much less than I do.

Hi I can only tell you how it helps me if I take my usual dose of between 50 & 75mg @ about 9pm then I'm feeling a little sleepy around 10.30 & it does help relax me & help with sleep. I don't have any effects the next day & I have to be up by 7.15. Hope this helps a little.

I take 100mg and the only side effect I have is a very dry mouth. I take 75mg just as I go to bed and 25mg in the morning. It really is a drug that affects people differently, and as others have said it's not a tablet that you can take as and when you feel you need too.

It's also possible that you can get side effects for the first couple of weeks and then they can lessen over time. When I was a teenager, I had a very low dose, and it caused horrific nightmares that I couldn't wake up from, so I stopped taking them, and its only now I'm much older that I can tolerate it so well.

I started on 10mg at night. In the end I was on 75mg at night, 10mg in the morning & 10mg at lunchtime. I never had a problem with them during the day as it is a low dose.

Be careful amitriptyline can cause bab probs teeth guns as dry mouth no that asked dentist confirm this
