Can I take sertraline and Amitriptyline together?

I’ve been taking serttaline 200mg for 3yrs. This was for anxiety and depression. I told my GP the my Fibro pain was getting much worse and the exhaustion debilitating. So, he weened me off the 200mg of sertraline and put me on 10mg of Amitriptyline. He’s referred me to a rheumatologist, no idea when this app will happen, didn’t prescribe and pain relief as he said the Amitriptyline will help with the pain and the depression? I’m in absolute agony. My upper and lower back are BURNING With intense deep pain, pain across other parts of the body and chronic fatigue. Any advice would be very much appreciated. I work full time and it’s awful 😢

Hi Shazo29. I have been on amitriptyline 10mg for years as a migraine preventor. It was increased to 20mg a year ago when I was diagnosed with Fibro. I was put onto sertraline 50 my about 6 months ago an have also remained in the amitriptyline. 10 - 20 mg of amitriptyline is not a therapeutic dose for depression. I don't really think that it does much for my fibro pain but I keep taking it as it works well at preventing migraines.

I hope you find some relief soon.

I am a GP in Dublin and I have over 50 patients on lowdosenaltrexone (LDN) .for Fibro. Most of them do not use any other analgesic but I would be happy to prescribe amityptyline 10 mg too. LDN works for over 100 conditions -see lowdosenaltrexone.org. It cannot be used if on opiates EdOF

I considered LDN but afraid to stop Opioid BUT then found that if you take an even lower dose of N, stopping opioid isn't necessary. I haven't tried it yet. I've been on Norco, opioid, for 15 years tho Vicoprophen at. first which worked well but then affected my intestines.

Last year when I was suffering with depression I was on 150mg of sertraline taken in the morning & 20mg of amitriptyline in the evening, my GP wouldn't prescribe this combo, it was prescribed by the pain consultant & it was important not to take the two drugs at the same time.

Thank you for the replies. The locum today asked why I’d come off the sertraline?? I was confused, he gave me cocodamol 🙄

I take both of them together for well over a year, why shouldn’t they be taken together? Scary to think I’ve never been told this 😦

My gp said they are fine to take together. I have been on both for 2 years and not had a problem. Had a couple of med reviews with pharmacist as well.

Hi, I'm currently on 100mg sertraline and 30mg of amitriptyline per day. Plus the strongest dose of co dydramol and I'm struggling at that. I think you should go back to your doctor and pester him until he gives you something else x

My GP is never ‘my GP’ over the last few weeks I’ve seen 3 locum GPs and one GP who is new to the practice (again). Always have to go all through my history and I feel ignored. I’m trying to hold down a full time job, not sleeping or just managing a few hours of broken sleep. Work listen, they’re sympathetic, got a occupational health assessment tomorrow. I’m worried sick about losing my job, lifestyle and independence. The stress is compounded by the illness and the GP isn’t helping. 🤷‍♂️🤬😞

Hi i'm on 30mg of sertraline and take 50mg of amitrpyline at night and have been on them both for quite a few years now with no side effects. So go back to your doc and see what he says.

I’m sorry to hear about your pain. If I was you, I’d go back to your GP to clarify the meds and take time off work. How can anyone concentrate at work with such pain. I couldn’t. Just see your GP. Everyone is different. Good luck x

Thank you, I’ve had so much time off over the past 2 years with bereavement, broken bones, marriage breakdown (32yrs) he just left. Operations, deppresion, anxiety and now this!! At the moment I take each day as it comes this week I’ve managed 1 day, last week I did 3 days. Work are good but I feel a burden to my colleagues. GP is never the same one twice it’s a nightmare. 🤷‍♂️😞
