Has any one been prescribed steroids to help with fibro symptoms? I met a chap who said he used steroids from the GP and within a day all

symptoms were gone. I have been diagnosed two months ago. I take co codamol naproxen and amitriptaline. They do help. But still have pain and difficulty sleeping.

Could this man have meant he had polymyalgia? That's what I thought I had initially as it is in the family. Polymyalgia responds very well to steroids. But whether or not they work for fibro I don't know.

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today?

I personally take steroids on a regular basis, I have prescription, Prednisolone. However, they are not for my Fibro but for my COPD. I have Emphysema and Chronic Asthma. When I take the steroids it has no effect whatsoever on my Fibro. The only thing they do relating to it at all is give me some extra energy! They are a drug that comes in short dose uses unless you are on an exceedingly low dose. Normally taking between 30 - 40 mg daily for 5 days then stopping.

The problem with these prescription steroids is that the side-effects are chronic! You must never go anywhere near a child with chicken pox, they lower your immune system and they increase your blood sugar exponentially. Not too mention the elevated risk of osteoporosis!

So unless you really need them I would steer well clear if I could. I personally wish I never had to use them. I sincerely hope that you have found my post useful, and I want to wish you all the best with your Fibro.

I to was given a short course of steroids a few months ago and can honestly say that I will never take them again!! I felt a slight change in the fibro but the side effects were awful! I had terrible dreams and became an absolute monster within a few days!! Felt really aggressive and short tempered! I was glad to come off them!!

I have heard of this but when I asked further it turned out to be Polymyalgia - apparently something quite different despite being led to believe they are the "same disorder""

Definitely not the same. Two members of my family have it and it is treatable with steroids. I believe too that it shows as elevated esr on blood tests whereas fibro,doesn't. Trouble is the risks attached to steroids. My elderly mum has osteoporosis and thin skin as a result of years taking them. This is the whole problem with medication - you take it for one thing which helps and then it messes with another bit

I can confirm what others have said. I have been on steroids every day for the past 14 years for a different illness and developed fibro subsequently. My fibro symptoms are still severe. I would also point out that it is documented in research (and is also my personal experience) that any alteration in dose of corticosteroid, whether increase or decrease, can cause an increase in fibro symptoms. Unfortunately then another "miracle cure" myth debunked. Sorry Folks!

Thank you all for your help and input. I think I will continue as I am I take my pain killers and pace myself the best I can. I am finding I cannot work full time and my boss is allowing me to go part time starting in June. Taking my painkillers only give small relief it is night time that is difficult. But I won't give in to this. Once again thanks.

If you are having fatigue problems with working you may want to discuss this with your GP? There is a medication available called 'Symmetrel' and this is an anti-fatigue drug. It may be something worth discussing with your doctor?

Hi whitehawk59. I know a lady who has Polymyalgia and is taking steroids for it. I've never heard about taking it for Fibro though xx

I had steroids a few years ago for a separate condition and helped with energy, but the side effects are horrible.
