Any one addicted to diet coke

Fourboys profile image

I have dry mouth syndrome and the only thing that helps is ice cold diet coke, but with all the warnings around, I wondered if any of you drink it?

It is diet and I don't have alcohol with it (;

Hugs to all

I only drink diet coke or pepsi max (the one I prefer, but it has that aspamarte thingie in it) with ice, even in the winter when I go to bed as it helps wash all the medication down and I wake up during the night with a dry mouth and have a sip and also wake up in the morning with dry mouth. Like you say nothing else seems to help as if I sip water as soon as I stop I am dry again. I think I confused my son the other day as I was walking along with him and I said my mouth was really dry, he offered me his ever present bottle of water and I said No not that sort of dry, meaning only an iced diet coke would do.

I was addicted to it so much so that I always had a can open. I gave it up nine years ago and now I drink tonic water when I am out or lemonade. I believe it is bad for you and addictive give it up girls xxgins

Yeah - diet coke is pretty much as bad as the full-fat sort. Unfortunately it also tastes pretty good!

It's full of aspartame, and it contains enough caffeine to seriously upset your system. It's acid content is actually high enough to de-mineralise your bones, and it rots your teeth for the same reason. My dentist always drops to her knees and begs for divine assistance if she sees a child with a can of coke in their hand!

It's not addictive as such, but the caffeine can cause a bit of a habit, as coffee does.

If you have a dry mouth, you'd be best to drink some ice-cold sparkling water - it's the bubbles that help so much - and put a splash of juice in it if you like. There are several dry mouth remedies you can buy in chemists, and some are available on prescription.

If you have a chronically dry mouth, it might be a good idea to get your doctor to look. It can be a symptom of underlying disease, as well as fibro

be careful drinking anything with aspartame in, its a wood alcohol and known to cause bladder cancer. its banned in alot of countries, the taste leaves me feeling sick, so i only drink full fat coke[usually with whiskey in it [yes i know!!!!] ] or sainsbury's high juice

I recently gave up diet coke and identify with lynnecw not feeling that anything else would quite quench the thirst .... It's been about 6 weeks since I gave up ( having read somewhere that it may be implicated in making fibro pains worse ) and I still miss it . Particularly the 4pm at work can - "only an hour to go" refresher . I now keep various fruit juices in the fridge at work so I at least have a choice .... But DO still miss the "pscccccchhsh" of opening a can of the DC. I must try to remember to look to see if I can buy cans of natural juice to at least give me some feeling of "normality" (for me).

On the plus side my aches have improved considerably - though also taking co-enzyme q10and increasing my vit b12 - may not all be down to giving up the diet coke.

Guilty as charged m'lord......love diet coke! Whoops! X

I would give up eating and just have the DC totally hooked, I do feel addicted, we cannot leave the house without a couple of small bottles/cans :))

You do all know that caffiene and sweetners make fibro worse? Cutting it all out makes a huge difference. Initially you'll get massive headaches as you detox.....but its worth it to go through the withdrawl ( sounds like addiction

to me ! ) If I have just one glass now the headaches come back.....but. the benefits to being off it are very obvious !

Try it ! Lol

Chronic dry mouth might be BECAUSE you drink this stuff. I could drink gallons of it and still feel thirsty. Water (from a bottle) is just as convenient and flushes toxins instead of creating them x years ago now I worked with a

dentist who treated dry mouth syndrome. He

told patient to drink half a litre of water before even getting out of bed in the morning. It makers a big difference x

You're right there, Stepper - statistically 75% of the UK population are chronically dehydrated and don't realise it.

Drinking too little will make fibro symptoms worse - we ache all over and feel foggy anyway, so why add more of the same symptoms by letting yourself get dry?

Yes! yes! yes! I LOVE diet coke, but I drink the caffeine free type. I know it has artificial sweeteners in it but basically I don't give a toss! I find it helps when taking my meds to have something ice cold and fizzy. I know I could drink fizzy water but I prefer diet coke. Some people do find that DC makes them more thirsty but it doesn't affect me that way. Being T2 diabetic I have to have no added sugar squashes and such and fruit juice is a no go area for me - sends my blood sugars waaaaay too high!! XX

I stopped drinking coca cola when I saw what it could do after a can was spilled and left overnight, it burned a pattern into floor tiles that industrial strength bleach could not damage.

For Your Info

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It

will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium

from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must

use the Hazardous Material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.

3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Now, the question is, would you like a glass of water or coke?

Thank you for answering my question "addicted to diet coke" very varied but most against drinking it. If diet coke is as bad as it says should we all avoid everything with artificial sweeteners added such as fruit drinks, ice cream, yogurt, mouse etc etc etc.

I did forget to mention that I also have Lichen Planus, which makes my mouth so sore, it's like having ulcers covering the inside of mouth not the tongue, diet coke really does calm this awful condition.

Have a great weekend all, hugs x

Having read Esagestapo's response, I thought I would post the whole thing of the benefits of water over Coke. It certainly put me off Coke

WATER:

1. 75% of humans are chronically dehydrated.

2. In 37% of people, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. (probably because they pee out all the bacteria)

9. If you have chronic headaches or migraines, suck down a 20 oz bottle of water at the onset!!! It helps to lessen the pain

COKE:

1. In many states (in the USA ) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from porcelain and china.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled up piece of aluminium foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminium foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for sumptuous brown gravy.

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.

9. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

For Your Info:

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.

3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is...

Would you like a Coke or a glass of water?

Yes fourboys x I've cut artificial sweeteners out as far as is possible. It gives me migraine, bloats my belly and sets off IBS symptoms.

I don't like the pain x

I replace with safe foods x

YES ! I had a tough job coming off it as well.I wanted to get off aspartame .Now I don't drink it any more I'm looking for other foods with it in so I can eliminate them as well.

peppersoo profile image

I avoid aspartame completely. It has been said it can be one of the biggest causes of Fibromyalgia....Although I've got worse since I stopped using it.

I was addicted to Pepsi Max for years and could sink 15 cans in a day easily durring summer. i never touch it now. I live off Coffee, Orange and Grapefruit juice and if I need to quench my thirst I have tonic water. I'm not keen on water on its own. I only wish I was.

Hi peppersoo, thank you for taking the ime to get back to me. I am really having trouble coming off of Diet Coke, nothing else seems to help the horrible dry mouth, I have tried so many alternatives but I will carry on the fight against drinking it, but sometimes I just can't go without the taste and fizz especially when it's ice cold.

I have to say I just love your dog, he is so cute I can't seem to make out the breed but he/she is adorable. Are you in UK.

Thanks again hugs x

Hi Fourboys. Yes I am in the UK, in North Essex. My dog is aChichon (mummy was a bichon frise and daddy a long haired chihauhau. Her name is Tia and she is almost 18 months old. She has taken on the Chihauhau size and is quite small, she is a very well behaved dog and great company as I live alone, well with her and the cat Jemima, who is bigger than Tia but they get on great and the budgie Zippy and a tank full of fish. Oh and an imaginary chicken...my 2 year old granddaughter Mayzie, insists I have a chicken!!!

Anyway do try and get off that stuff, honestly it is making you worse....have you tried cutting it down gradually? I bought bottles at the end and found they would go flat so I wouldnt drink it...but I'm glad I don't need it now...should someone take my OJ away I'd be in withdrawl from that, there is always something with us addictive natured people. I like to have 2/3rds fresh oj and 1/3 grapefruit juice, I mix and keep in the fridge in a bottle...on days when I have a thirst that needs quenching I have 1/3rd oj and top up with tonic water, it has that thirst quenching bite...try it.or if you find that too sharp try soda or fizzy water, flavour them with some juice or cordial, but kick that coke kid! Take care, Pepper x

And one more thing....back in the day my mother was addicted to Corona's Coola...those old enough will remember it. Corona used to deliver to the door all different flavours and then you would get money back on the empties the following week. Well she loved the coola the same thing as coke or pepsi....she drank bottles of it, she would get 3 crates a week and they held 12 bottles a crate, not little bottles but almost a litre in todays money. She would climb the walls if she ran out....She died at 46 from a secondary cancer, the first was kidney cancer 3 years previous, I swear that coola killed her. She was hallucinating about it running down the streets like a river, hours before she died.

Coke to me does not taste the same as years ago, perhaps the amount of sugar they used has lessened over the years, I do like chilled Fanta lemon or even tonic water which is supposed to be good for you. Have you ever tried some of the real fruit ice lollies to suck , I am wondering if that would help, especially if we get the hot Summer days, another drink I like to have is orange juice topped up with lemonade and I always keep slices of lemon in the fridge, I wear a cpap mask over nite so I get where your coming from with the dry mouth.
