pelvic infection following egg retrieval

Hello everyone

I have developed a localised pain on my left side of pelvis day 3 after egg collection that got worse during bowel movement today, I was reading about it online and it sounds like an infection, have anyone experienced this before ? I have an appointment with my consultant tomorrow but I am very worried about possibility of infection.

Also he wanted to do urine test and swab but is there anything else I should push to have to cover everything?

Many thanks 🙏

I’m sorry you are experiencing pain after egg retrieval. Could this be Ovarian hyper stimulation symptoms? Mine started with pain on one side, bloating and general feeling unwell.

Hope you get it sorted!

Just to add, the clinic didn’t initially think it could be OHSS as 9 eggs retrieved, but it was and I was hospitalised for 3 nights to monitor the pain and my fluid levels.

Thank you for your response, Oh wow! Yes same so I had 10 collected and I have asked few times and they said there is no chance of having OHSS with that number!

I will push to have an ultrasound today I hope they can give me an answer.

Could I ask what other Symptoms you had that you were hospitalised?

My main symptom was pain in my left ovary, which radiated across my back. It was like a stabbing, sharp pain, that I initially thought was appendicitis. Although, I did develop this at around 6 weeks into pregnancy rather than just after egg collection.

The pain was quite extreme, to the point where I was vomiting, so that was the main reason I was admitted. It did subside after a few days, but then came back a few weeks later in the left ovary. When I was scanned both my ovaries were around 15cm.

It could just be that your ovaries are swollen, but providing you don’t have a fresh transfer and become pregnant, then it should subside. My symptoms eventually went away at 18 weeks, but up until that point I had some level of ovary pain, bloating, discomfort on most days.

So if you have any inkling that it’s OHSS, then I would do a frozen transfer.

Hope they are able to schedule a US today for you. Best of luck!

thank you dear

My pain isn’t as bad as that I have just bloating and occasional pain in my left ovary ( it’s the ovary that had more eggs) my tummy did look very swollen the night before. I just wasn’t sure at what stage to let the clinic know because I wasn’t feeling sick or anything. I will do a US today let’s see what happens.

did your clinic give you an antibiotic ahead of the collection? That’s standard practice at my clinic - if so, more likely to be mild OHSS. For previous collections I’ve had around the same number collected as my most recent (12-16) but with this one i had fluid around my ovaries (could be due to different protocol) so i don’t think the number collected can rule it out x

they use a suppository antibiotic during/after the procedure, I had a scan and my ovaries weren’t oversized or anything so hoping it’s not the infection 🙏
