I'm 37, on my first IVF cycle and just needed some encouragement/advice. My egg collection on Friday retrieved 11 eggs (4 fertilised, one half fertilised, 3 mature eggs (waiting on their progress) and 3 over-fertilised). Today I received news that 2 of the 4 fertilised eggs may also have over-fertilised too, so trying not to be too disappointed.
Is there any way that clinics can avoid this happening? It just seems such a shame where nearly 5 of my eggs were over-fertilised by maybe 2 swimmers getting in there. Especially after all the days of trying to get to this point.
We'll be so lucky to get 3 blasts for this cycle but just wanted to hear some encouragement. I've waited nearly 2 years to get here and it's been so hard keeping my anxiety at bay. I am due for a transfer on Wednesday x
The forum itself has been so helpful so any words of wisdom would be so appreciated 🩷 feeling a bit deflated right now 🙁 (that's probably the progesterone talking).

I'm sorry to hear this - it's such a hard process.
I think ICSI can be used in this case - where they will individually insert a sperm in to an egg so if this round isn't the one, there is definitely something that can be done next time to avoid this.
Hi. That is sad to hear after a good egg collection. However, you do have some decent embryos for transfer. I wish you all the best for a successful transfer on Wednesday. Drink plenty of water, and should you need a fresh go at any stage, perhaps consider ICSI. Diane
If this round doesn't work for you ICSI could be used next time this would prevent over fertilisation as they would inject each viable egg with just a single sperm. Good luck with your transfer Wednesday 👍
Echoing what others saying re ICSI - this could significantly improve the outcome. We had similar issue - fist IVF round 10 regs collected, 5 fertilised and only 2 made to blast. Second round we split IVF and ICSI 50-50 (although we didn’t have any obvious egg or sperm problems) and out of 12 eggs we got 11 fertilised and 5 blasts in the end in total. I was 35 and 36 year old then.
I’m currently pregnant with one of the ICSI babies. So definitely give it shot in the future!
Aww so happy for you sweet and hoping you have a smooth pregnancy! That really gives me so much hope - thank you ❤️
I was just initially disappointed that they hadn't chosen to use ICSI despite us signing consents for them to do so if/when required. I just assumed that if our blast rate was low and we had mature eggs that could be fertilised (like my 3 atm), they would make that decision for us to improve our chances. But it just doesn't seem like that has happened.
Nevertheless, it's educated us about what we will need going forward so trying to keep mine and hubby's hopes a little higher. Will certainly keep 50/50 in mind xx
I know how disappointing IVF experience can be, especially first time when you knowledge is limited and expectations are high. As you said, every round you learn something and change approach in the next one. Like in our case, we didn’t have any indication for ICSI - the lab suggested it based on the previous poor outcome.
Saying all that, you might not need a second round! 3 is a great number - you have a good chance, as statistically you need up to three transfers to get pregnant with IVF. Now, focus on your upcoming transfer - I’m wishing you the best of luck xxx
As others have said, definitely worth giving ICSI a shot. I'm currently sat with my 7 week old ICSI baby 👶🏻. Usually you can get quite good numbers with ICSI. Hopefully this round will work for you but, if it doesn't, this information will enable them to better tailor the treatment for you next time. Good luck x
