Just wondering if anyone has been in this situation and able to say what the outcome was- even if bad? It’s an IVF pregnancy so the dates of what I should be are in stone.
1st Nov Scan: EPU; put me as 5.1 when I should have been 5.5. (EPU scanned me because there were concerns I was having a ecptopic) no heartbeat. Just a sack and yolk.
7th Nov Scan: IVF clinic; said I was 5.4; when I should have been 6.4. They said there were two sacks and I had miscarried both and should contact EPU again. EPU scanned me on
8th Nov: EPU felt there was sufficient growth from their previous scan and whilst no heartbeat and felt it was a miscarriage they wanted to follow their policy of a week before treating me but agreed to book me in for the MVA (they remove the embryo while awake, it was horrific last time but I recovered quickly, I had a MMC in February)
14th EPU: Heartbeat found and it’s grown again. Dr said we need to ignore dates and go on weekly growth. We couldn’t believe it and neither could the EPU.
Scan booked for next Thursday.
It’s measuring 5.6 when I should be 7.3.
The EPU dr said it could go either way. My IVF nurse said when I called to update her that in her experience when it’s this behind a miscarriage is likely.
Any advice? Similar stories? Want to be prepared

Hi. How confusing for you. Some a pregnancy can be a little slow to start, so let’s hope is what has happened and your next scan will show that all is well. Thinking of you. Diane
Thank you…I see you are a nurse? I was wondering, could it be the second sack has now developed but this is why it’s behind? Or am I clutching at straws?
So sorry you’ve had to experience this journey. I’m also in a similar situation. I had my transfer 24th Oct and positive test on the 4th. Low rising hcg but roughly doubling every 48 hours. I was seen by EPU last week Monday as my consultant wanted to make sure I wasn’t having an ectopic. They couldn’t see anything except some thickening in one part of the lining which they thought was where implantation may have happened. I then went back yesterday and they saw the sac and yolk and the start of an embryo. I’m meant to be 6 weeks now but they’re saying it’s more 4-5 weeks. I think in situations where you have a slight delay on implantation this can then really affect the dates etc. It sounds like things are on the way up for you though so just hold on in there! Wishing you the best of luck!!
Thank you for messaging. It’s just so stressful isn’t it? Do you have another scan booked in? I’m just so scared that for myself it will be another miscarriage. Ironically when I stopped all my IVF meds I felt so sick. Now I’m back on them I have zero symptoms again!
It’s horrible and you’ll always get someone who will say something that’s not appropriate or lacks kindness. There is always someone! I was told by my local EPU over the phone that I was miscarrying because I had a negative test after a positive. They hadn’t even seen me yet and didn’t fully know my case! I have my ivf scan on Thursday and EPU want to see me again in two weeks time. Don’t stop any meds, just keep going. Of course protect your heart, but try and avoid the doom and gloom of the internet. You’ll always read worse case scenarios whilst trying to search for glimmers of hope. There’s many people who will give advice like their consultants yet their day job is in IT. Just hold tight, be lead by the ivf specialists and try close your ears to others around. Even themselves will tell you there’s wild and wacky things that happen in ivf - it’s a complex science but there is also an element of magic to it.
My IVF clinic have been less than helpful - they told me it was probably delaying the inevitable. They have discharged and me and told me to be led by EPU. Praying for magic for both us. Just feels unfair- the IVF pathway is hard enough.
That’s terrible! It seems like ivf care is patchy across the country and it shouldn’t be a post code lottery. I’m so sorry you have experienced this from them. Once some of the cloud passes then please consider making a complaint to the HFEA
hi lovely I’m so sorry I had this and it wasn’t a good outcome I’m afraid, it dragged on with weekly scans until just over 9 weeks there was a heartbeat and growth bit measuring about a week behind and by 9 weeks the heartbeat had stopped. I miscarried naturally about 10’days later after stopping meds etc. I googled it so much and couldn’t find a positive outcome in this situation from an IVF pregnancy as we know the dates. But the doctors did say they need to see things stopping or moving backwards in terms of growth before they can be sure of a misscariage as they of course have seen miracles in the field. I hope yours is one of them xx
Hello, firstly sorry for your loss. I appreciate you sharing with me. I have also googled it a lot- Reddit had a lot of forums and the picture is stark. I really hope so too. X
I’m so sorry for what you’re experiencing, it’s so confusing and painful. We’ve just been through something v similar. Positive pregnancy test on Oct 10th, first scan about 10 days later they saw nothing and we were preparing for (another) miscarriage. Three days later there had been growth, one week later more growth, we were told it was a viable pregnancy. Next scan no growth (!), we had to have another scan before a miscarriage was diagnosed- so weeks and weeks of back and forth. Then I had a very traumatic time post surgical management, I think this was due to my adenomyosis but during the pain and trauma none of the drs recognised this. I’m sorry I don’t have a more positive story. Every situation is unique, so you don’t know, you just need to keep having the scans. I’m so sorry it’s so difficult and stressful x
Hello, I’m so sorry for your loss and subsequent experience. I’m trying to hold my nerve and that Thursday is not so far away. I am praying the heartbeat remains and we’ve got good growth. I should be 8 weeks 3 days. I sometimes wish I hadn’t had to have early scans because I wouldn’t know any of this…but it is best to be prepared isn’t it.
Hi all. Just wanted to post an update in case anyone finds themselves in a situation similar. Scan yesterday showed it’s grown from 5.6 to 6.1 and heartbeat now slowed substantially. EPU believe it’s a matter of time and have rebooked me for a scan and MVA on Tuesday. Thanks for all the kind replies to my original thread. It was really appreciated.
