Hi all, just looking for some advice. We are needing to use a donor egg. Our clinic in Spain is asking my husband to get a blood karyotype test. We live in The Netherlands and it’s proving very difficult to get this test. Has anyone else been asked to have this test? If so where did you get it done? Is it expensive? Is it worth it? Thank you for your help, this id stressing me out!

Karyotype test
Hi lovely,
My partner and I had this done before we did PGT-A testing of our embryos - to see if there was any genetic issue they should be looking to isolate.
If you're using donor eggs I would imagine only your partner would need it doing? It's a simple blood test but yes I think fairly expensive - I can't actually remember sorry! I had it done with my clinic in London

Hi Millbanks, thank you, yes it would just be for my husband but the test is so rare here it’s hard to sort out! Just wondering if having the test it worth it? Guess we may need to fly to Spain just for the test 😴 They will do pre genetic testing on the embryo anyway as we know there are a few chromosome issues so I’m not sure of the be fit of having the karyotype test also? 🤷🏼♀️
Our clinic made it mandatory to have the karotype test done before PGT-A, as there are sometimes chromosomal issues that might be passed down if you both have it. I don't know how likely that is if it's just one of you though. Maybe see if you can speak to someone as to how important it is? If they are already doing PGT-A then maybe not so important. xx
If mentioning clinic name/costing please use PM
Thank you

Hi there, both me and my partner had to have it before the PGT-A testing. We did the test in Spain as we couldn't find a provider near where we live that could, and it ended up being easier for us to get a cheap Ryanair flight for the day and do the blood test. It was about 130€ each of us for the test, and the results took about 10 days (I think). There were no actual concerns on either of us, I think it was an unnecessary extra in our case, but they were adamant we needed to do it 🤷🏼♀️
Hi, my husband and I are with an ivf clinic in Spain too. Ours is in alicante and they wanted us to get this done. We live in Northern Ireland and nowhere did the Karyotype blood test here so we ended up going to alicante for a holiday for a few days and getting all of the required tests done there. It was really nice to go and visit the clinic ahead of our treatment. We did our first round last month and I'm hoping to get a scan in NI this morning as I'm on the first say of my period so hoping to start the stims this month again. Wishing you the best of luck with it all xx
My partner has severely low sperm count and a karyotype was a mandatory thing for him before we could begin our NHS round of IVF. It tests for chromosomal abnormalities so the results provide information that could then inform a couple about the potential additional needs or considerations in relation to any child born, including infertility being genetic. The NHS waitlist for the test results was too long so we paid £420 to have it privately and got the result in a week (in Yorkshire,England). It was all clear and feels good to know that!
Hi there! Most Spanish clinics request the karyotype; it’s part of their essential fertility testing (unlike in the UK). We got ours done in Barcelona for €80 each! (Feel free to message me and I’ll give you the details, if interested). It’s so cheap there compared to anywhere in the UK so would strongly recommend doing it if you fly on holiday, for example. Results took about 4 weeks in our case.
