If you’re pregnant via IVF what happens next?

I might be jumping the gun but what typically happens next if you have a positive test after ivf? I know I’d have to email them and let them know my result but what are the next steps? Blood test? Scan? When would this happen via nhs? Also when can you normally get back to exercising?

Good Morning

Normally you would email to advise them that you’re pregnant and then they arrange a scan for you. From the scan they or yourself refer yourself to your own hospital and then the midwife’s take it from there xx

Thanks very much. Do you have any idea when said scan would be?

I think it’s 6 weeks xx

They are normally quick at getting back to you with a date for the scan xx

Ok. I have to wait until Monday to email as that’s my test day. Although I’ve been testing positive since Monday 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻. I have a holiday booked which might have to be cancelled.

my clinic scan from 7 weeks 5 days. They arrange it when you contact them to say you had a positive test. Our clinic accepted a positive test from day 11/12 and negative from day 9.

I waited until after the ivf scan to contact midwives at my gp. They saw me pretty quickly after and I had the 12 week scan letter through not long after that.

I’ve seen some peoples clinics do a blood test to check hcg levels are rising but mine didn’t.

They did ask you to take a test around a week later to make sure it was still positive though.

I went on holiday at about 8 weeks! It was a great distraction from feeling anxious about the 12 week scan!

Thanks for getting back to me. I’m day 9 now and have to wait until day 14. I pray it stays stuck! I have a feeling my clinic don’t do bloods and I recall them mentioning a scan but not bloods.

I’m an IVF mum & also a midwife. I got my first scan with fertility at 6+5. I then referred to midwives for booking (I was 9 weeks for booking) & then dating scan with NHS at 12 weeks. Perk of the job I had a few scans between our 6-12 weeks though! That helped me relax as was spotting loads, & I also got HCG bloods taken with fertility (my request- not their standard) again because of spotting.

Amazing you have a positive so early!! Is that just one embryo testing positive by day 7 following 5 day transfer?

I’m curious as I’m going for a FET today & plan to test early (never have before) but think it will help me process if it’s not going to work (telling myself it is going to work though 🤞) xx

Hi! Thanks for replying and for sharing your experience! I transferred 2 embryos so I could be carrying twins. Both are day 6 embryos and I used a First Response early detection test. I think those are the most sensitive ones. Usually I test from day 9 despite being strongly advised not to because if it’s negative I can just deal with it and stop wondering about it. I figured if I was carrying twins I might get a result on day 7 but I have also read several people get positives that early on. I’m finding this week mentally hard because I keep thinking about how it might be a chemical and how I cannot relax until 12 weeks. Time is moving so slowly!

think positive! I’ve paid for a month of ‘positive ivf’ app & the mediations are helping me stay positive (I’m day 1 2WW. This is 10th round. Single transfer. Had our daughter round 4) xxx

Meditation can be so powerful! When did you have your daughter? Best of luck in the two week wait.

She was born Christmas Day 2021 (had a miscarriage Christmas Day 2020 so it felt very full circle 🥰)

She was after a biopsy for EMMA/ALICE & we’re hoping the scratch is what made her stick. I’ve had a scratch test last month in the hope that’s the key. 10 rounds is a lot 🥵.

Going to test at 6 days post transfer I think 🤞🤞

The timing is very interesting, like it was very meant to be. 10 rounds must be exhausting! Hope the scratch has the same impact as it did the first time round 🤞🏻.

I did a test this morning that was still super faint by the 3 minute mark and I panicked as thought I might be having a chemical. I’ve done one since that is my strongest positive but that first test spooked me!

hey, my clinic scans at 7weeks and if that’s ok then you’re discharged and have to get yourself booked into the nhs system. Best of luck! I’m in my tww right now too and losing my marbles!

Mine have already rolled off the face of the earth! When did you have your transfer?

Hahaha honestly! Last Friday but my test date isn’t until this time next week which seems like forever to wait.

So exciting that you’re testing positive and the possibility of twins eek! One hurdle after the next isn’t it. Hope it’s smooth sailing for you from here onwards

Typically they will give you a date for an ultrasound usually 3 weeks after you have confirmed pregnancy with your clinic. 🤞🏻 for you hope all goes well. 💜

I had to inform them of my positive and then they arrange a 7 week scan at the clinic. After that your cares just hands back to your normal maternity unit at hospital to arrange your booking ans 12 week scan
