Has anyone got experience of High prolactin?
I've have 3 rounds of icsi here in the UK and never been tested for this but the clinc abroad had me tested for this and mine is well over the normal range.
I've done some reading on it and it can leased to infertility issues and miscarriage. Both of which I've experienced
Hi. If this is really high and you have symptoms such as leaking nipples, you may need to have a CT scan to check for a rumour on the pituitary gland in the brain, where most of your hormones are sorted out. Please don’t panic and think you have cancer. It can usually be treated with medication. Also, do you know if your Fallopian tubes are clear, as any blockages could cause excess lubrication to leak into the womb, possibly preventing developing embryos from implanting. Also, a hysteroscopy to check out the womb and biopsy the lining. These are just my thoughts and may have already been done. Your specialist will take care of everything I’m sure. Good luck. Diane
Hi thanks for replying. I don't have those symptoms, it's about 250 higher than average and I had never heard of a prolactin test so I've never really look into this just wondered if this is common.
Hi. It can fluctuate and is another hormone. It has a huge reference range ad often is not investigated until well over 1000 with symptoms. Diane
my sister had this - made her cycles very irregular and she even seemed to lactate. She was put on some medication for it, it made her cycles regular and then she got pregnant a few months later. She wasn’t doing ivf though.
So yes they should be able to give you some medication to help sort it! Very annoying they hadn’t checked you previously though 😞

Yes me! How inflated over the normal range is your prolactin levels? This is what came back in my bloods tested over here. So I was sent for an mri to check I didn’t have an issue with my pituitary gland which there wasn’t. So the registrar said that they could prescribe me carbogoline. However, I didn’t like the way they made me feel instantly after taking them (depressed) and on the inlay said you shouldn’t take if trying for a baby. So I refused to continue taking them. The registrar then said whilst my prolactin was high, some peoples normals are higher. I suffered a miscarriage at 12 weeks (first natural pregnancy) then had an unsuccessful transfer with one of my frozen embryos - then our second one was successful. So all I can conclude in the end is my prolactin levels were high but that must be normal for me. I think you probably need the scan to check and you can get this on the nhs as I did.
I see you say yours are 250 higher, I think mine were 150 higher. So it might not be an issue in the end. But definitely get the scan to rule out any issues

I had just never heard of prolactin throughout my years try to convince and I'm like maybe this is part of the reason...but I'm also aware I'm just looking for anything that my explain why we have been unsuccessful so far, thanks for telling me your experience with it.

Definitely get referred as they might think carbogoline is a good idea for you to try. The reason the fertility doctors didn’t really care for me I was ovulating successfully each month. I too hadn’t really heard of it but the fact is little is known really about women’s health and fertility in this area. Hormone levels are normal and abnormal for different people and the combination levels might also be different for different people. It may very well be normal for you. Have you had scans that show you ovulate? If so, perhaps the issue doesn’t lie with you?
I do ovulate regularly, well I did up until the last year, but I out that down to finishing hormones for icsi and it might just take time to return to normal. Had round if icsi and we got pregnant, miscarried at 11 weeks, and the other 2 round embryos created and made it to transfer each time didn't implant.
It's only now we are having treatment in Prague and using donor eggs, given my age I don't want waste anymore time they have advised for me yo get tested for this.
The more I've read about prolactin it shows that it can reduce implant as well as ovulation...again looking for any glimer of answers and hope lol x
I looked into this but i asked my clinic for it due to low level lactation symptoms and recurrent implantation failure. Youre right if it is high it can cause problems. there are 2 medications you can have, the clinic should advise next steps. It can be caused by pituitary benign tumour usually diagnosed with mri/CT which does need treating or no known cause; other than feetility issues there can be long temr problems associated with it like heart and blood pressure issues. NHS does bugger all apart from bog standard one size fits all. I've gone private now and the difference is amazing too with more tailored approach to my body's response and history. I also looked at potential immune and clotting issues but these are expensive and rated red by HFEA.
Hi, I have hyperprolactinemia and at one stage was refused IVF because of how high my prolactin levels were, triple what they were supposed to be. It affects your fertility as it may stop menstruation due to making your body think it is pregnant. You need to be referred to an endocrinologist who will test you and depending may ask you to have a MRI to ensure there isn’t a growth on your pituitary gland. Most people normally respond to low dosages of medication quite quickly. Unfortunately I haven’t, I appear to be in the 10% of the population who have an high resistance to the meds, and am now on the last set of medication they can try and very high dosages of it. Most people with high prolactin levels are either on cabergoline or bromocriptine and not high dosages.

Thank you for replying. I will follow the advice of the clinc but just really trying to discover more about prolactin etc as I had never heard of this and this will be my 3 Rd round of icsi
