I am 11 weeks pregnant with mcma twin and suffer from chronic migraines, my doctor has took me off my beta blockers but this past weekend I took a really bad migraine for 3 days I lost count of the amount of times I was sick and had to call the out of hours doctor. All he could give me was anti sickness at the time but after speaking with my doctor she has suggested sumatriptan but obviously it comes with its risks , so I was just wondering if anyone has any experiences with this during pregnancy? Or if you have any other medication you could share that you have used ?

Thank you

dear choccypie90

I have a 10 month old now and I suffered badly from migraines before getting pregnant and was taking sumatriptan regularly.

I had 1 migraine before I found out I was pregnant and had a couple while pregnant in the first trimester. But I was told not to take sumatriptan by my miscarriage consultant, Ivf clinic and GP and only took paracetamol if it was really bad and luckily it worked.

I was very reluctant to take medication at all while pregnant as I had recurrent miscarriages but you might feel different.

Hope you can find a solution as you seem to be suffering badly with them x

I take sumatriptan for my migraines, I saw a consultant about it who said I could take it if I needed to but obviously try and avoid if possible. She said its a relatively new drug, so not much testing has been done with pregnancy, but from what they do know there are no known problems caused by taking it. I'm currently 18 weeks and had to take some a few weeks ago because I had a 3 day migraine.

I was told to avoid sumitriptan but was prescribed mersyndol - it’s a mix of Panadol, codeine and an antihistamine that helps with nausea and also makes you drowsy. It really helped being able to sleep it off
