Nerve pain after acupuncture

Hi ladies, I know this isn't a normal question for here but I know so many of you have acupuncture so thought it was worth an ask.

I've been having fertility acupuncture for years and after my transfer I had my usual follow up acupuncture. Hopefully you're familiar with the needle they put in the underside of the left wrist for blood flow etc.

When the needle went in on Thursday it really hurt, slightly more than usual but it subsided really quickly, so much so I fell asleep. That is a sensitive wee point I find.

However since then, I've been having a shooting pain in my left wrist - not at the site of the needle, but right in the middle where my wrist and palm meet. It happens anytime I extend my arm or stretch the tendon. Its so uncomfortable and feels like an electric shock. My acupuncturist says she's never heard of it before.

On top of the tww, I'm now really worried I've got some permanent nerve damage.

Can anyone relate or know how I can relieve it? I can't even reach down to put my socks on without it stinging and I'm scared to stretch my arm at all.

Joey x

Hey Joey. I had something similar after I had an IVIG on one occasion. I was worried I had nerve damage. Literally exactly as you describe - if i stretched my arm I had horrible sensation shooting up and down my arm. It subsided after a few days though it was worrying at the time. The accupuncture needle probably triggered a nerve to be honest. I'd give it a few days and if you are still concerned make a GP appointment to discuss x x

Oh thank you so much. It's been 5 days now and doesn't seem to be subsiding. I'll give it another week and take it from there. It's just another flipping worry although it's given me something else to think about to be fair lol

If its not subsiding or you think it might be getting worse no harm in making GP appointment, you never know with GP slots - you may have a few days to wait until you can be seen anyway x

Hi Joeysjourney, I had the same thing few months ago, I found information that sometimes these needles can prick/damage nerve. My acupuncturist was denaying that and that these needles won't go as deep. But it did. I felt the same like you did, it hurt more than usual. When he removed the needle I started feeling like fizzy electric shock whenever I moved my wrist, elbow etc and it was going straight to my 2 fingers in left hand.

This awful sensation finally went away after few months, I think it took like 3-4months to fully dissappear.
