Hey! I'm going through my first ever IVF. Friday had a scan which showed 11 follicles, had my eggs collected on Monday - they got 8. I'm trying to work out why I 'lost' 3.
Had the phone call this morning and 5 fertilised which I do understand is between the 60-70% rate the clinic says.
I'm so nervous about only getting 1 or even 0 now to day 5. Also, the afterwards of egg collection is more painful than I thought it would be. I couldn't really walk as when I got shooting pain I like had to fold over on myself.
Just looking for a bit of reassurance for the whole process really!

Your numbers are great ! The 8 follicles that developed are obviously the strongest - that why the other 3 did not progress As you say fertilisation rate is good so hope the progress continues Discomfort is common after egg collection - make sure drinking plenty of fluids[ to prevent constipation] - take painkillers [paracetamol no anti -inflammatory meds such as ibuprofen ] Be aware of colour/smell of urine in case it is the start of a urine infection If pain increase give your clinic a call for reassurance
Hi Gabby2011, your numbers are very similar to mine after my egg collection. I had around 14 Follicles, 8 eggs collected, and 5 fertilised. It is quite normal to have less eggs than follicles as not every follicle contains an egg, and not every egg will be mature. You have a good number there. It’s seems that at each stage the numbers are usually halved.
By day 5 I had 1 embie ready for a fresh transfer, and by day 6 another two Frosties.
Good luck over the next few days it’s such a stressful time but take care of yourself and stay rested xx
That all sounds really normal, try not to worry. A folicle doesn’t always have an egg inside it.
I also find egg collection painful, I usually have it under a GA for that reason. I’ve had three fresh cycles and for me they usually collect 10 eggs, around 7 or 8 will fertilise and then around half of those then make it to day 5 blastocyst stage.
My last fresh cycle we transferred 1 and froze 2.
It’s always upsetting but not all of those eggs would have been a natural pregnancy anyway.
I now have a 6 year old and honestly his labour was easier than the process we went through to get him.
Wishing you lots of luck for day 5 and your test date.
The wait after transfer is also really hard. Be kind to yourself and keep busy xxx
